EBMM StingRay Special Club

THis is not technically challenging bass work. I do know that. And it was just me on everything so don't expect any of the other instruments to be really impressive. It was just to show the band how it would/could work.

But that's a 5H with Cobalt flats. No matter what, the TONE is good, eh?

I think I took a line out from a LittleMark II and that was about it. Maybe a little compression. Certainly nothing fancy.

This is going to sound so strange but I really DISLIKE the punchy sound that the stingray is known for...but I just love the way the instrument feels in my hand. I back off on the mids and treble (EQ + AMP), stuff foam near the bridge, etc, etc, etc.

I am really trying to make my Special sound like a Precision Base pretty much, haha.

Well, I don't know, does the bass on that cut sound overly 'punchy'? I don't even know what the term means most of the time. Like Flea? That sort of Stingray tone? Because I hate that tone. And I don't think anyone would mistake the tone I get from that 5H w/flats for anything Flea has ever done.

It cuts through well, and not “overly punchy” I like it. I have the HH and it’s smoother than the H as you know.
You got a great tone.

Not at all --- I was complimenting your tone actually...I don't like that exact tone you are talking about either. I like things sitting low in the mix to provide a solid foundation...some where between what Jamerson does with a P mixed with a dub bass tone from a Jazz.

I think I'll be able to lock in with flat wounds but we'll see! If worst comes to worst...it will be a Precision Elite for me sometime in the future to chase after that tone BUT I'll always keep this guitar as well.

I think - if you like what I'm getting out of my SR5 - that you'll forget all about the Precision Elite.

Had two Ernie Ball MusicMan Stingray and one MusicMan Sterling basses in the past. Liked them but they were not totally satisfying to my ears, although very well built.
Now have a Special 4H JetBlack with ebony fretboard and it is simply killer!!! Super well built quality, finally an active Bass I really dig!!! What a deep tone, and the improvements on the neck, weight and pickups are making a big difference for me!!! Kudos to Ernie Ball MusicMan!!!

I rather like your concept (I hope your band mates did) and the bass sound was very nice indeed. Nice work.

So here is a slightly different slant on this topic. I played today at an outdoor pub do with a series of bands - about an hour each - having had Chameleon (Herbie Hancock) added to the set, for the first time in about ten years I decided to use (shock horror) effects!! I tried various basses with them before settling on my SR4HH special - the effects used were an EH Bassballs Nano and an EH Octave Multiplexer - for the stage set up I used my MB LM3 with 2x10 traveller DId post EQ to the PA.

I needn't have worried at all - the sound was thunderous with an octave down plus a nice sweeping quack - the special really worked well with these effects and changing both playing intensity or the EQ or pick up settings produced a lot of sound variation - anyway the bridge H and a medium string attack over the pick up got exactly the sound I wanted.

So the Special appears to work extremely well with effects.

We played in direct sunshine so I'm also looking forward to seeing pics - I got quite a few comments about the aqua sparkle finish, which was lit up in the sun - I'll post one if I get hold of one.

As always, I used position 3 (both pick ups humbucker mode) quite a lot - with a bit of added mid on the bass, amp flat, the sound guy was extremely happy with the signal, in fact was raving about the bass sound generally. Position 3 also gives a great slap sound. I used bridge H with the effects and on a couple of songs, and outer singles on Watermelon Man - where I was aiming for a Marcus Miller type tone. It all worked extremely well and I'm still very happy with this bass.

Neo pickups, new voiced preamp, lighter weight, more contoured, roasted necks, new lighter hardware. Maybe more?

I use a ton of effects and with the exception of compressors, I have had nothing but good luck with the SRS.
