EBMM StingRay Special Club

I’m a little disappointed in myself. I took a couple years off from playing bass only to come back and now discover that EBMM has released a new StingRay :hyper::bassist:

Easily my favorite basses of all time, and the new appointments look fantastic.

Can anyone comment on any tonal differences between the ebony board vs the maple? I always found rosewood Rays to sound softer and woolier in the lows and low mids than their maple counterparts.

Welcome back to the club! I’ve played both and i would say that the maple might be a tad brighter, but honestly I’d say go with the one that appeals to you in the visual department - they are reasonable close. I went with the ebony board, no regrets.

Thanks Sean!

I’m definitely leaning towards either the charcoal or aqua sparkle finish. They look amazing and all demos I’ve found sound fantastic.

I went charcoal, it’s really nice. I thought it would be too over the top for me, but I really like it. Frankly I’m still amazed I have a Stingray 5 strings that isn’t a boat anchor.

No photo yet. My black/black/roasted maple Stingray Special H4 arrived last week. Best built bass I've ever owned -- and I've owned some good ones. I can do things on this bass that I couldn't on my Fender Jazz. The E and A strings are incredible. The D and G . . . not so much. I'm going to restring it and give it another chance. (I think my example saw more than a few vigorous test drives before I got it. The "popping" strings may be shot.)

Guess I'm in... finally. I've wanted an HH since they first came out, but... like most basses I've wanted over the years - no lefties for me. So, when a little birdie told me EBMM was making a run of them, I managed to snag this beauty. The round wound Slinkys will have to go - eventually - but I'm a happy camper now...:whistle:

Also keep in mind the neodymium magnets in the pickups are incredibly strong. Make sure pickup height is to EBMM specs for the Special, rather than the regular height you might use on other basses. If the pups are too high on these it can deaden the string response

No, but you can modify the Hipshot BT13 extender that fits the Bongo basses for the Specials (just swap the Y key on the BT13 for the clover on the special).

It's from a little over a year ago, but I don't believe anything has changed. You can always give Hipshot a holler, too.
