Personally, I like that the default on the Special is a bit smoother than the previous Ray; maybe I’m just weird LOL:roflmao:

I think it was intentional to make the Special smoother. That was a big selling point for me, as I always found previous Rays overly harsh, but I can see where fans of the older ones might question it.

I believe it was stated here previously that the Specials may be on the sensitive side to changes in strings and I for one couldn't agree more. I'll admit that I was initially a bit underwhelmed by the more sophisticated nature of the Special as far as tone is concerned. I don't intend to disparage the stock strings but after loading a set of Rotosound FM66 this bass woke up and took notice! Of course any bass with a fresh set of lite & brite stainless rounds is going to have some added sizzle but the difference here was night and day. The Special is now a confirmed keeper. Looking forward to how it grooves with some broken in TI flats.

I've been enjoying my SR Special 4H for well over a year now. I tend to favor bass boosted 25-50%, with mids flat, and treble boosted or cut to taste.

With some of the recent messages, I'm curious - what settings do you guys feel gets the Special into Classic, 2Band, or pre-EB territory? I've never played these, but have always had a soft spot for the Classics.

I play mine totally flat with a slight treble boost using an Elf head set flat and Warwick 2x8 Celestion loaded bass cab, but its all amp/ speaker/ string/ playing style dependant. If I switch over to my Gallien Krueger combo amp the eq on the StIngray needs substantial adjusting. Personally I am not interested in getting the Classic 2 band sound. I had a beautiful black 2 band with maple neck in 87. My new Special marroon mist with rosewood sounds better.

I set mine with bass and mids boosted all the way and treble about halfway up, sometimes more. I usually play on the back pickup only to get the classic stingray sound. I use my Boss GT1-B pedal set up with a compressor, limiter and Parametric EQ.

It's definitely more tame than a traditional stingray, so I have to get a little aggressive with the preamp to get the traditional sounds.

But then there's the other 4 pickup settings which sound different and with those, I'm really kind of all over the place with the preamp settings.

So I’m on my 3rd SR and I got the SR5 Special right when it came out. I struggled with my first two SR’s fitting in a big band mix, but something about my special just does it. I know it’s tamer than the old preamp/pickup configurations but this version works so much better for me. I played a Christmas Eve service tonight and this thing just slayed. I’m two+ years in and still loving mine.

IMO, the Special has more low mids and sits better in a band mix, kind of like a P-Bass. I also wrestled with getting a good supportive sound in a band mix with the zingier older model, though I've heard players who make them sound terrific.

It does have more low mids. I've found using the mids works better than the lows

It sits very well in the mix and it’s very easy to adjust to a sound that will work. For my band I’m A/Bing my 5H Special and Zon Sonus 5/1 and I have to say the Stingray was working better. The Zon has a superb tone but lacks mid-control and with heavy hitting drummer and loud and busy guitar it was working less well (“less” because damn, that tone is incredible)

I showed yesterday the Vault’s pink limited edition to my wife and she told me “you should get this one”...damn...the 5er were gone...gonna track one and hoping they pop on Reverb or here one day

question, I had someone tell me that their special came with a cert of authenticity, but mine didn't. I contacted the dealer I purchased it from and they said that these dont have them. Is that true or do I need to reach out to EB to find out whats going on?
