QUESTION!?!

As you may have seen, I'm seeking a Ray Special 5HH in aqua sparkle... however, I'm interested in modifying the pickguard (or having a new pg made) so that it has the traditional oval shape and not the weird shark tail shape that the 5s have.

Does anyone have experience with this? Or atleast have a 5HH that you wouldn't mind taking the pg off so I can see the layout of the electronics cavity...

It's like those clear tropical fish at the pet store.

A little airbrushing on the underside of the 'guard in the vicinity of the cavity could make a bid difference. Maybe a little silver with a nice gradient at the edge.

is your friend on talk bass? I'd love to ask him a few questions about it. I.E... is that a standard 4 control plate, custom order? Is the pg custom? How did he get that black part on the bottom? Is it two different pickguards?

He is the guitar tech at Mid Rivers Music in St Peters Mo. I’ll ask him if I can give you his email. He’s very approachable and had fun with this project. I’ll talk to him tomorrow.

Isn't the blade switch a series/series-filter/parallel selector for the pickup? I figured the added toggle switch controlled another function like active/passive which would be pretty cool

This may seem like a dumb question but how do you get the battery compartment open. Do you just push on it somewhere or is some object needed to pry it open. I could experiment but don't want to scratch it up unnecessarily.

I just talked to the tech and he said it was a tone preamp bypass switch to send the signal straight to the output. He said the tone preamp in this bass cut some of the signal. I had him put a series parallel switch on my old SBMM classic, that why I said that originally.

He bought the pick guard and control plate off of eBay. They fit the control board off the 5 string. He cut a black pick guard to fill the void and for the pickup switch. Let me know if you have any other questions. The black plastic goes under the control plate and pick guard also, 1 piece of pick guard material.

Not a 5-string player, so take this for what it's worth, but I really don't care for the Silhouette/massive pickguard design of the StingRay5. I think the standard StingRay shape/pickguard would look great for a 5'er, similar to what they did with the Classics. The modified 5'er posted above looks leagues better than the current model, even with the extra black pickguard to cover the route.

Just wanted to say... Recently I acquired my first 5'er, a G&L M2500. I've been practicing on it a lot lately. I'm somewhat of a G&L fanboy for their passive basses, but I've never been huge on the L series. The M is really nice and I love how broad the 3 band EQ is.

Last night I had an itch to play my Special 4H just because it had been about a month since I had taken it out of the case. OMG. This bass was made for me. I forgot how much I love the feel of the neck, the tone of the revoiced EQ. everything... EBMM hit a grand slam with this bass.

If anyone has a Special 5HH in aqua burst, I'm interested in buying.

Those aqua sparkles are so nice. I even saw one recently on Reverb that has a matching headstock. Not sure how that came to be as its the only aqua sparkle with matching headstock that I've ever seen.
