All that said, the sparkle and color are really great. Probably the nicest looking bass I've ever had out of dozens. The playability of this bass of absolutely top notch and most importantly the sound is awesome. I've had a few of the pre special Stingrays over the years and they were nice but I never fell in love with their tone. I decided to gamble on the specials being a remedy for what I didn't love about the old ones and so far so good.

I wonder if the issue is more about final buffing than a thin clear coat.
I doubt anyone could be certain by photos but it doesn't appear that we are seeing the outline of flakes not fully covered but rather a uniform not super polished look.

Yeah Jim I believe you are correct. I’m going to get in touch with EB next week to see what they say.

Sorry for the late response. My SRS5 HH Tectonic Blue Sparkle finish is very smooth to the touch.
I hope EBMM helps you figure it out.

I don't think the issue is paint being smooth to the touch. My Tectonic Blue is smooth to the touch as you'd ever want and I believe so is metrons. We are talking about a dimpling or little sunken spots all over that are only visible in certain light at a certain angle as in his photos. Check yours out again carefully and let us know. Mine doesn't bother me as I think it still looks good but metron wants to know if it's a defect.

A surface that is not super polished can still be very, very, smooth to the touch.
I'm talking about looking at the surface at an angle and marveling that it is uniform and reflective as a piece of glass with no rough texture that is visible.
That over top of big flake is the most awesome gaudy finish around!

Yep thats right. It feels smooth but doesn’t look it upon close inspection. For what it’s worth, Ive looked at closeups of other sparkle finishes and can see the same thing if the lighting allows. Its really hard to tell though.

Really just curious if this is normal or a hit/miss thing. I reached out to EB today. They have always been outstanding to deal with in my experience.

+1 same. I have a stable of two really good Jazz's, two great P bass's and my trusty old 1996 3-band Stingray. The Special is now my number 1.

Same here. They “fixed” everything I didn’t like about my previous Rays. Everyone that’s played it has been like wow this is so nice. Even converted a guy that never liked Rays to get one

Been wanting a special 5H for months... Tried to satisfy the urge by buying a Ray35 but just not the same. So I sold it and want to put the money towards a special.

Any idea on when EBMM usually announces new finishes for the year? Not much in stock currently, not sure either to wait or order something now. If there are new finish options coming I'll wait probably. I want one with an ebony board.

The new yearn is here and I haven’t seen anything mentioned yet. Don’t know if there will be changes this year or not. But I doubt it. Most of the time it doesn’t change yearly . Maybe every other year or 2-3 yrs. But nothing is written in stone. Sometimes I think it depends on what sells and what doesn’t.
Who knows. If you consider used there are ebony models available .
Any idea what finish direction you would like to go?
