If the bass has the amethyst sparkle finish I honestly would not even care how it sounded live since it obviously is the right choice in every situation.

Ha, I'm clearly in the minority here! 
Honestly, I love the Amethyst Sparkle. It's a great finish, really unique, as are most of the Special sparkle finishes. Post pics and I'll like them everytime. But, even though I really like them, I just like bursts better.
But, the important thing is the bass. And at least we can all agree that these basses are worthy of the name Special!

Here's my frost green beauty. Wondering what kind of strings you guys are using to get a nice Stingray growl. I have a 2006 Stingray 4H which has been my main gigging bass for the past little while. I have gravitated to DR lo-riders with that one.
While I'm loving the Special, I do find it a bit more subdued than my Stingray - not necessarily in a bad way - but I am looking to add just a touch of growl to it. It currently has Super Slinky's. I'm thinking of trying some DRs on it - maybe Hi-beams or one of the variations (Sunbeams / Fatbeams) would be a good combo?

I love that finish with the maple board!
I have used DR Hi Beams, Sunbeams, and Pure Blues with my 5H. My preference has been Hi Beams and Pure Blues for growl and bite. Sunbeams were good at first but dulled too quickly.
Pure Blues are my current fav
Don't be afraid to crank the treble too
I found a similar difference between my Special and my 2007 ceramic Stingray. However, that difference is a big part of the reason I wanted to add a Special to my collection. I wanted both tones.
The previous owner put Elixir Nanowebs on my Special and I left them on for now. I like the warm, low mid kind of tone I'm getting from them. I haven't used DR nickel Lo Riders on my Special yet, but they sound fantastic on my 2007. Actually, they're my favorite string overall and have sounded fantastic on every bass I've put them on, but especially on my 2007. If something like the Nanowebs would be too tame for you, the nickel Lo Riders would give you more snarl and bite. But, if you want even more higher mids or highs, the stainless steel Lo Riders would definitely give them to you. I loved them on my 2007, but it's not a sound I needed for what I play so I prefer the nickels.

That finish looks amazing with the maple board. I use EB Cobalt Rounds and get a very zingy top end for the first two weeks the strings are on. The coating wears off fast, but they sound amazing while they're still alive!
That’s a very nice finish. I get plenty of growl from Cobalt ( renamed) Slinky Flats. I use the lightest gauge.
Stock Slinky Rounds are nice but they don’t last long.
Well, I know the rules....no pic or it doesn't happen.....so.....Here is one of my new additions! Just got done putting my strings and a quick setup to my specs and I am very happy!!! Although technically this is supposed to be a x2 Stingray Special post my other one is getting a bit of a fret cleanup on it before I can take a few pics.
OK elephant in the room: we all love EBMM and respect what they do but why for the love of God, can they not line up the fretboard dots and the strings on the 5 string????
What? All of my EBMM fives have the A-string lined up dead center to the position markers. I find it’s Fender that has the A-string south of the markers.

Yeah, my SR5 Special is pretty much dead center as well. My Bongo 5 doesnt have any inlays so I can't compare on that one.
I'm afraid to go look at my Stingrays now.

I'll have to check mine but it really wouldn't bother me at all since I'm not ever looking at my bass straight on like that.
Mine are ok - however when I changed the strings on the 4HH they went slightly out - fixed it by slackening off the strings slightly and realigning the saddles before tuning up (the saddles are not held laterally, rather like a Fender - the earlier Stingrays had the large fixings which kept them in place) - also depends a lot on the photo angle - you can rarely get exactly perpendicular to the bass!!
