And thanks for the info on the Foundation Nickels. I’ll have to make a mental note to consider them next time I want to put on a new set of rounds.

…probably won’t be soon, though. I tend to keep my rounds on my basses almost as long as I do my flats. :D Plus I just replaced the Chromes on my ceramic SR5 a few days ago and put on a set of Nanowebs, so it will most likely end up being one of my other basses.

My only other suggestion is furniture grip tape (Lowe’s). You will NEVER have a bass slide on you again when sitting down during a session or gig. Easy to apply, easy to remove with no mark or residue. Schaller locks, a Hipshot Xtender and the ‘lap grip’ tape. First three things I do to every bass.

To me, the Special sounds like a StingRay — no mistaking the tone for another bass.

To my ears, the newly designed preamp of the Special makes the output sound “warmer” and less aggressive than previous versions. There was a harshness in the treble that I never was able to fully dial out successfully, and I don’t have that problem with the Special.

Thank you for sharing, loved the idea!
I've been using a piece of Grip Drawer and Shelf Liner to avoid that annoying bass slide, but this is certainly a better solution.

It’s a slightly different vibe but the sound is absolutely there. I had both at one point but never touched the classic after I got the special. The finishes are better (more durable), the roasted necks feel great, the eq is more powerful/versatile, and they’re significantly lighter weight.

In short the Special made the classic obsolete.

Hi RedJag, do you need the factory specs? I found them in FAQ section of EBMM website: Basses - how do I set up. I can copy/paste if needed.
I know you asked lobster but as I just finished a setup a few nights ago, I wanted to share. I had to adjust the setup when I switched to the custom light gauge strings from the specs strings.
Personally, I used the factory settings as a starting point and with little to no neck relief I was able to get a very solid sound from the Special and zero buzz using 40-120 string gauge on my 5hh. However, I wasn't happy with the action for chords and in general it felt like I was working too hard especially compared to my G&L M2000 which I can pretty much drop the strings as low as I want without any adverse effects. (G at 1.25mm! - I wonder if that is what a quarter sawn neck will do for you?) I dropped the strings a bit on my Special 5HH to the following:
Neck relief - slight. First I set the string heights to where I wanted them or at least to where I could live with them. Then to get rid of the fret buzz, I added a slight amount of relief until I didn't have the buzz any more. Actually, I was pretty happy with the overall action and sound. Got rid of the weird "sproingy" sound that I was hearing too.
Measured at 12th fret in mm.
G - just under 2.0 but greater than 1.75
D 2.0
A 2.0
E 2.25
B 2.5
Neck pickup 5.0mm both sides
Bridge pickup 3.5mm both sides

I don't have the Slugger but it looks like a standard stingray special HH, just with block inlays and natural finish. I would assume it would sound the same as any other SR Special aside from the small variance in sound that any model of bass might have.
