Here, here!….Great; When I read Rogers Post I thought well if SS Frets changed tone it was for the Better with Stingray Special
I haven't switched out, but one thing I did to help is orient the screw to be pointing straight up when at the center detent.
I love mine. One of the best cases I've owned. I do wish it had the backpack or over the shoulder strap in addition to though.Those of you with the new mono case do like them would you recommend them? Just curious
Unfortunately I can't open it. Anybody else have this problem? I'm very interested in the mods. Is it possible to only use the bridge pickup with the coil closer to the neck by itself?
Try playing some Cream or CCR with just the neck pickup!
If you don’t need back straps, they are great. I loved the MM/Mono case. But there’s no provisions for a backstrap, so I sold mine to a most popular participant on this page and bought the Pro Tec Contega case, which works great with back straps.Those of you with the new mono case do like them would you recommend them? Just curious

Well, it's here, but it took a while... TLDR - got a new 5HH, skip to bottom for pictures...
As I've mentioned in this thread before, you can't buy a Stingray Special from any shops in New Zealand - EBMM don't ship to our little corner of the earth. Just over a year ago (with the help of Basscliff and this thread) I bought a 5H and a friend of mine brought it back from the States for me (story here). My key criteria was weight, and an extra pickup adds about 1/2lb - I coudn't find a 5HH in a colour that I liked that weighted <8.5lb. So, I pulled the trigger and it's been my main player for a year.
But - I had a hankering for more tonal variety, so have been keeping my eyes out reasonably casually for a 5HH. Well, one popped up at 8lb3oz (I know - awesome!) and happened to coincide with another friend heading to the US and offering to bring it back for me - serendipity, right?
I bought online, and had it shipped to North Carolina - only had a week window to get it to my friends, but I ordered on a Monday and it arrived on Wednesday. Because it comes with a gig bag that from the advice from the good folks in this very thread was probably not up to the rigours of an international flight, I came up with the cunning plan to buy an SKB 1SKB-44RW hard case - essentially a shell with a TSA lock that you can fit a gig bag in. Not sure of the dimensions of the EBMM mono case, I asked the vendor to confirm that it would fit in the SKB and test it in their warehouse - they confirmed in writing that it would fit. Nice - we're good to go.
My order arrived in two parcels where my mates were staying in Raleigh, and they sent me this photo with the text "is the softer case supposed to fit into the harder one??"

At this stage it's 8:30pm on Wednesday 3rd July at the vendor's location - and they close at 9pm the night before a relatively big public holiday... Oh, and my friends fly out at 2pm on Saturday...
So, I'm frantically on the phone, they recognise their mistake as I send the photos, and agree to fast ship another case (a Gator TSA case - gig bag will have to travel separately). "Will it get there by Saturday at 12pm?" I ask. "Yes, no problem, it'll ship Friday and we'll overnight it...". Ok - Plan B in action. Of course, I have to pay for the 2nd case otherwise their system won't ship it... As a contingency I also search for music shops local to Raleigh and manage to locate the same case, just on the slim chance it doesn't arrive in time - and my friend calls them and reserves it on the Friday morning - you know, just in case...
Friday comes and I can see it's left the origin - excellent. I go to bed (the timezone difference is a bit of a drama), wake up the next morning NZ time, and instead of being routed directly to Raleigh as the first shipment was, it's heading to Memphis. I'm all for paying homage to the King, but this could be pushing the friendship. No way it's getting to Raleigh for Saturday, so Saturday morning US time we invoke Plan C, they pick up the Gator case locally (3rd case I've now purchased) and they're off to the airport, on the way to Houston, and then Auckland.
Or so we thought - storms in Houston meant that the plane wouldn't land and any rerouting meant they'd miss the connecting flight - so they disembark with the other passengers and head back to where they were staying to arrange new flights for Sunday - where they had to fly via San Francisco. Sunday comes, they get on the flight and with a 50 minute connection time, get on the international flight and do the 14hr long haul down to Auckland, arriving Tuesday morning - exciting, new bass that night!
But wait, there's more! I get a text from my mate about an hour after they've landed in Auckland: "Ummm, we're home safely but none of our luggage - including your bass - made the connection". Fabulous...! Thankfully Air New Zealand were able to quickly locate the bags and agreed to ship them out when they arrived.
So, the bass arrived safely on the Wednesday night and it's all I could hope for. A quick trip to my luthier to install straploks, set it up with my strings, tweak the setup from travel and do the coil split switch mod that @pertyman showed us and I have it back. Can't put it down - love the tones I'm getting from it (8 different tones with the switch mod), how it looks (Black Rock), how it feels. I know @ics1974 has modded a 5HH with full coil splits but 15 different tones is probably too much choice for me!
Now, I'll need to sell the 5H in Frost Green Pearl - any takers in NZ???!

Sorry about that - try this Soundcloud link which shows the 8 tones available by using the 5-way selector switch plus the mod which turns off coil 4 (settings with coil 4 off denoted below with *).
Settings in order of the recording are as follows. Each setting is played for 4 bars, so about 1m20s of audio total...:
- Bridge humbucker (5-way selector switch Position 1 - Coils 1+2)
- Outer coils (Position 2 - Coils 1 + 4)
- *Bridge single coil (Position 2, - Coil 1)
- *Bridge humbucker + neck single coil (Position 3, Coils 1+2+3)
- Both Humbuckers (Position 3 - Coils 1+2 + 3+4)
- Inner coils (Position 4 - Coils 2+3)
- Neck humbucker (Position 5 - Coils 3+4)
- *Neck single coil (Position 5 - Coil 3)
Yes, you could use the bridge pickup with the coil closer to the neck by itself - it'd be a case of installing the switch on the other coil of the pickup (turning off coil 3 instead of coil 4). Or, if you used a 3way switch you could configure it for Coil 3 / Coil 3+4 / Coil 4 and have even more flexibility. I'm considering this!

I think I'm going to sale my Mono Ernie Ball gigbag. I just prefer the over the shoulder design. These are killer cases though.
I have mine modded with a three way switch for each pickup. I can get every combination possible

Is there a way to add a active passive on the volume to the stingray? To me that would make it the perfect bass.

Thanks for the soundcloud link! Sounds like a worthwhile mod to my ears. I own a Special 5H (well, actually I am still waiting for the repair after having had it for only 1 day in April!) and am afraid I‘ll miss my P Bass too much. So I am thinking of having the „inner coil mod“ as a P-Bass-ish alternative on hand.
I can’t believe that MM/Mono case doesn’t have back straps!
Especially when my Mono Dual Bass goes. What’s that about??
Oh, well. I sold my MM/Mono case as well and bought a ProTek Contega case for my 5H.
Sold mine too and ordered the Protec Contego. Those are great cases for the money with lot's of storage.
So what is everyone's favorite setting on the 5HH basses? My favorite is 1-All bridge with bass boosted and highs cut a little. Next is 3 center-Both pickups flat with maybe a tiny bit of mids boosted. #rd would be clot 4 with both inner coils flat with slight md boost. All 3 are fantastic in a live band setting.
