So the Special 4HH in Candyman arrived on Friday. Sounds, plays and looks great. Unfortunately, SW was off on the weight. Instead of 7.1 pounds, it is actually 9.25 pounds. It will be going back. They were apologetic of course.

Now I am debating on waiting for another lighter one or possibly ordering a CDE bass. The SLO neck is very appealing to me.

That’s alot more than being off on the weight, that is just flat out wrong . Also , very off to see a 4 string Special at that weight.

CDE is a great option, However, you can’t be guaranteed to get a light bass. And they won’t take it back because of too much weight. So far, FWIS, they have all been reasonable weight.

If EBMM is smart , I’m sure that won’t build them too heavy and shoot themselves in the foot. It appears to me that CDE and BFR / Limited Run Signature models usually get light weight choice woods. The 5 on my rack all fit this criteria .

That is really annoying. But does show the benefit of buying from somewhere you can return hassle free for the next one

Not quite hassle free because I have to pack it up and take it back to Fed ex but nearly so.

Lol true. Say what you want about Guitar Center but I appreciate them as I live and work by multiple. Very easy to pop in to return stuff

After spending a few days with my StingRay, I really wish I had gotten one of these sooner. I can't thank my wife enough for taking the initiative with this one - I'm sure I would've been indecisive and missed out on an incredible instrument. I can hardly imagine a better finish than Purple Sunset!

Question for the group: how are you currently using your volume knob? Historically I've just dimed the volume on every bass and guitar I've ever owned, but I'm realizing that might not be the best approach all the time.

I haven't been playing mine as much lately- but I always run the volume around 8, so I have room for "solo" volume as needed. Also, I have the HH Special 5, so I find I have to adjust volume and preamp for each pickup setting to stay even in the mix.

I would keep it but I like heavy basses. 9.25 lbs is not even heavy though. My Special is 7.9 lbs and kind of wish mine was 9 lbs. I just prefer the feel and tone of a denser piece of wood.

I don’t think there’s any connection between tone and weight

There are great sounding heavy basses and great sounding light basses. Just like there are bad sounding heavy basses and bad sounding light basses and everything in between. I’ve played some boat anchors that sound awful.

With all things being equal I’d prefer a lighter instrument as would most people considering how many people ask.

The reason for returning it, is that it wasn’t what was advertised and at this price point it’s not acceptable to be off by more than 2 pounds.

That’s a lot of flame to go with that cherry red fire burst. Looks like a fretted Fuego BFR from a few years back.

Just curious how common the Specials come with a case like this? I heard it’s common with BFR’s , CDE and some Retro 70’s but I didn’t know they come with Specials as well until I got mine. Anyone else get one with their Special (non BFR or CDE)?

I got one with my Laguna green special when I bought it from Sweetwater last year, but then I saw they switched over to the mono bags.
