EBMM StingRay Special Club

So, I decided to return my 4H Fallout Green due to the buzzing issue. I had contacted customer service but realized I have 48 hours left on my 30 days money back return at the local shop, so I just took it back instead of dealing with the headache.

Overall, my experience with this bass was positive, as I now know exactly what bass I want next, and will be ordering another one. I've been thinking about going to EB directly and building one through the Custom Design Experience, but I have a question for you who have gone through the process:

Is there an option for passive electronics? This is the number one thing I would hope to get out of it that you can't just get off the shelf.

No passive option.

Only passive option is short scale and they are sold out until they decide to release another run. There was a passive BFR a few years back. Here is a link to pics and sound clips and reviews on that model. They come up used about once a year it seems.

my first post here.
Okay so this is my review on the new, Stingray Ball Family Reserve in Okoume. Only 80 made so they're gonna be hard to find if not already. First off, the pic was a stock photo I found online-SORRY I know its generic, but just search and you should see some online. It looks great in person, it's a head-turner. The wood has a great color to it, and each one will look slightly different depending on the grain.

Neck is amazing. perfect size, not too thin, just chunky enough and the satin finish is...

Based on your post you seem to have a love/hate relationship with Stingrays in General :)

For transparency I come from those whom are perfectly content with Stingray Special as is; no desire for passive option, tone knob, different EQ centers etc.

The preamp allows me to get 2bandish, pre special 3bandish and generic Pish tone with some technique and EQ small adjustments if I want; but I much prefer Specials Natural voice

You may want to consider something like this;

Good observation. Other makers will wont sound just like a MusicMan StingRay nor will they feel or play the same. But you just might find the sound is close enough for your personal taste .

I walked into Bass Central fully intending to buy another Special but came out with my Sandberg. The more I played it, the more I realized that it was a great addition to my collection.

I have a love/hate relationship with Rays that cost 3K and don't buck the hum... and people who judge me based on a single post. ;)

I liked everything about my Ray and raved about it here, until the issue started a couple days back. The excellent neck and overall quality especially stood out. I'll get another. I became interested in the idea of a passive because it reduces the number of points of failure, and sounds just as good doing it. The Commerford passive is proof of that.

I'm not interested in a Stingray-likes so I won't be considering the Sadowsky.

Fyi another option would have been contacting EBMM and doing a warrant claim. They would have swapped the electronics and paid for shipping it

Oh yes… how could I forget about the Tim Cummerford models ? Those might be just the ticket .

I am already looking at an Oxblood locally and a Hot Honey at Sweetwater. The problem with living north of the border is that we have all kinds of border problems to consider that you lucky lot don't have to worry about!

There is a passive Stingray Special, look for the "BFR StingRay Special Natural Okoume" plenty out there if you are a little patient. I've seen at least 5-8 on Reverb over the last few years. BEAUTIFUL bass and it has the 2-band control plate look which I always prefer.

Ooo that is nice. The maple will feel slightly different. Going to keep the black guard? I can see that looking better with white or tortoise.

You are right, as a customer, who is willing to shell out your hard earned money to expect a fully functioning instrument in return.

Hopefully, you'll get your wish!

I am on my third StingRay, and inspite of buying recently, for mucho dinero, I have no regrets.
