If something horrible happened and I no longer had my Honeyburst 5HH, that's exactly the look I'd get to replace it. The only difference is mine would be an HH.

I’m hoping that sometime in the future, I can actually play an HH for myself. My biases are strictly visual.

I just see an extra pickup that I don’t think I need. I am curious over the tone of both of those puppies going full-tilt, especially for slap playing.

I just got a new hot honey 5hh and I already have a burnt ends 5hh.

The honey bass came with the standard Ernie ball strings, was set up very well, and sounds great.

My other HH I have always had issues with string buzz on the B string and a generally wooly tone. I had been using sadowsky stainless blue labels since I received it as that’s what I use on most basses. I swapped the strings for the same Ernie ball set that came in the hot honey and the buzz is gone and the B is clearer.

I’m loving the Ernie ball strings and they are so much cheaper than what I had been using.

These specials are so damn good. I seriously want one in every color.

I just want every purple and sparkle finish they come out with . Whites and certain blues get my attention as well.

Yes EBMM does a great job of making stings that complement their basses.
Slinky Rounds , Slinky Cobalt Flats , and Ti Jazz flats and rounds are my favorites. EBMM slinky’s are cheaper but they do die quickly for some players. Not so much for me.

For me, nothing tops their discontinued Honeyburst. But those two are probably my favorite finishes in the post-Honeyburst era. I just love bursts!

That being said, since getting my Metallic Candy Red Big Al a few years ago, I finally started to appreciate other colors and finishes in general, and Musicman's in particular, especially their sparkles and metallics.

And you're right. The Specials are so damn good!

EDIT: I should add that my appreciation for non-burst finishes came primarily from the pictures posted by club members in this thread. So thank you (most of you probably know who they are )! Not that I'd ever turn up my nose at a nice burst, but I'm now much less rigid than I used to be about a finish I'd buy. Feels kind of unusual to become MORE open minded about anything when in your 60's.

I have a 1983 Stingray - anyone know how the necks on the Special compare to a vintage Stingray? Same profile? Thicker? Thinner?

that would be stunning !!!! you can contact EBMM and ask them if you send in your hardware, if they will replace it with gold. You would have curse have to pay shipping bth way and cost of the hardware. I know someone here that did that recently with gold . They order black .

“You are able to purchase gold hardware directly from us but we will require your serial number to confirm parts.

Also our bridge and neck plates are considered proprietary parts so we do require the originals to be returned (to be retained) before we can supply replacements.

it's also worth noting that due to the increases in the cost of gold our SR5 bridges in gold are currently approximately $400.00 USD and tuners are $120.00 USD each.”

I played an 81 or 82 recently and felt the neck was thinner back to front, nut width felt the same though. Not a huge difference but I prefer the Special neck, as I don't like 4 string necks that are too flat feeling (not the radius, but the back of the neck)

Every one only 6 basses except for my EBMM Short Scale active Tim Commerford have gold tuners. My BFR models were a steal .

According to my calculations ….. that would be about $ 1600 give or take a few hundred either way , for gold tuners, bridge, neck plate, knobs, switch tip cap, truss rod wheel, and pickup magnets.

Wondering what’s sounds similar to a Stingray, has a comfortable neck, doesn’t have a reputation for being heavy, is relatively inexpensive, and has color schemes you like.


A Sire, maybe Z7, M7, or F7? The M and F are 35”, IIRC.
