EBS = the goods?

Anyone here a regular EBS user? I have never had a chance to physically encounter any of their offerings, but I do lust after the TDS650 and the Evolution 4x12...also, how is pricing in North America? The list values seem extravagant.

I have owned a TD650, played the other heads, and currently own three EBS cabs. Great products, but I ended up selling my TD650 cause it wasn`t loud enough i 4 ohm to my use. The cabs are great IMO, up there with the best.
Before you decide on the TD650, you should also try the Fafner, who has a little more rock/vintage flavour.
You should also know that the TD650 and Fafner is not the loudest amps for the money, unless you drive them into 2 ohms load(must have two Proline cabs). If you are planning to use only one 4ohm cab, you might get away with the HD350. That amp is almost as loud as the 650/Fafner, but for much less money.

I know a guy who used to use them, he got the most awesome tones out of them but was plagued with breakdowns and the like. Eventually he sold his EBS stuff off for an EA rig. To hear they have reliability issues saddens me, as they are fantastic sounding amps.

I use a HD350 and a couple of their neo cabs, a 1x10, and a 1x12, either seperately or together in a mini stack. I play 6 string and you wouldn't believe the sound that these things produce.

I don't play really loud rock or anything, they probably are suited for that but are ideal for funk/jazz etc.
They give a really focused clean sound, with a nice, in my opinion, low end, not earth shaking, I'm not into that anyway.

I've never had a problem with any of the EBS gear that I've owned, this is the second time around for me with EBS, I went to using Aguilar last year, hated it, and came back.

I suppose that any manufacturer has items that go wrong, be it Ashdown, EA, SWR or anyone, and if you sell in sufficient numbers, then you'll meet more people who had breakdowns.

What worried me is that he said he was one of 6 guys he knew that was using EA, and 5/6 had had problems. I might have to check them out in future becuase they do sound really good. I'll decide for myself if I'll go for them (that is if I can tear myself away from Trace Elliot!).

btw Bassplayer, were you the guy from Bassworld with the Alembic Stanley Clarke and Status Kingbass Artist basses?

Hi
Try them out, you wont be disappointed, I've used TE gear myself for a few years, it's good but I think if you compared the EBS gear side by side with the Trace, you'll notice the difference and and change.
(I am the guy from Bassworld, I don't go on there much nowadays, I prefer this site when I have spare time), I use my Sei basses exclusively now, for me they just work better.

A weird thing about EBS gear, with my Status I was never able to get the Mark King sound using it through an Ashdown amp, but through an EBS 2x10 it was instant Mark King, soundwise anyway. Someone else told me that he's found the same thing.

EBS list Jonas Hellborg, Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller as users of their gear, players like that can use anything they want, so there must be something about EBS.

This was my experience with the HD350 and TD650 I owned for a while. If you are planning on running into a 4ohm cab or combination of cabs, there is not much difference between the 350 and 650... and the 350 is much smaller, lighter, and less expensive. The 650 seems overpriced and rather large and heavy for a 440 watt or so amp. Also, there seem to be quite a few posts on TBers having quality and reliability problems with the Fafner... so that might not be the best option. However, EBS might have taken care of the issues... not sure.

If you like the modern sound of the EBS amps and need more power (the 350 sounds great, but is rather underpowered compared to other two space heads on the market), believe it or not, the Carvin B1500 can get pretty close. One of the key features of the EBS amps is the 'drive' control and the very high centered 'upper treble' control (brite). The Carvin front end has similar controls and can go from that extreme sparkle to a convincing tube-like growl.
