EDB700 or SR500...

Hi guys, was just after a quick whiparound of opinions...

I currently have an Ibanez AGB200, beautiful looking bass but just doesn't pack enough punch for my music, even though it's fairly soft music...just not enough sustain and a bit muffled.

I recently borrowed an Ibanez BTB500 for our latest studio recording, and found it to be very versatile, and gave a better sound overall. I went to buy a cheap SR500 for 200 as I see they're quite similar, but I've just noticed I can get a new EDB700 for 340 quid...they've only got 2-band eq adjusters, and there's hardly any impartial reviews of them about though (ie people who haven't just bought one themselves)...

I wanted to buy the SR500, but I'm concerned it will be too 'metal' for our music, although the BTB500 was admittedly fine. Can anyone testify as to how the EDBs compare with say, a Jazz, and what the actual market of the EDBs is supposed to be? The reviews seem to be saying 'good for girls', but as a 6'5 guy that's not really the answer I'm looking for....

You can get an idea of the type of music we're going for by having a listen to "Shallow Water" at Link Removed, the most recent track so more indicative of the slightly 'heavier' direction we're headed - definitely want to rock it up even further though, so want big bass tone!

Cheers guys.

thanks for that, but I was hoping there'd be someone about who has had some experience with the EDB700, and could give an opinion on how it fares versus the sr?

I'm thinking you might have to wait a while for someone to tell you what the EDB is like, as they were never that popular. The Soundgear 500's are great; and they're definitely not limited to metal.

I have a EDB700. I was in the same situation as you choosing between the Ergodyne and the Soundgear. Both are great basses with good tone and sustain. Both of them have slim necks (the SR is a bit slimmer). The electronics on both the basses are good. The Ibanez made pups on the EDB are surprisingly good. I have finally chosen the EDB because of the price being lower as I bought it second hand. You should try both of them and decide for yourself. If you can't try them at least listen to online recordings from more then one source (that won't be easy for the EDB as there are not many owners, but you can check out Pooh Low End on Youtube. He's got a EDB700). The final choice is yours, but whichever it would be you won't regret it. I'd go with both of them. String them on with Elixirs or Warwick EMPs and they will do wonders for you. Good luck in your choice!
