EDC - Fixed or Folder

Just buy an open assist Benchmade. Under the length limit. Bullet proof (or cheap service). And if you dont trust the stability of a locked (and safety on, so to speak), you can't trust a fixed blade. Depends how fast you need to deploy, but I'd bet a good Benchmade would do the job without a massive holster. Just my experience. And I dont live in AZ.

I used to own the Benchmade and I loved the assisted opening; button shy of a switchblade. But then I cut an orange and discovered how flawed the assisted opening really is. Just some left over juices resulted it being sticky in certain areas and that resulted in the blade not opening fully. In short an orange is what defeated the assisted opening.

...but there's nothing better for cutting rope, fabric, or rubber...
I have to disagree with you on that. There is a reason I carry a Milwaukee Fastback Utility Knife on my left-side. It's better than any knife for the items listed and more, and if you want a hooked blade they offer that too and takes seconds to swap.

You sir are correct. Great knives, but I got two on deck waiting for factory maintenance (missing funky head screws is beyond me). I guess I would need to find a more compact or stealthy fixed blade when I snag a new one. Thanks!

Some folks get antsy about the inward curved serrated blade but there's nothing better for cutting rope, fabric, or rubber.

The curved blade takes some getting used to for cutting apples and such but I've had it about 15 years so I hardly notice anymore.
I have a similar Karambit-style blade like that, an Mtech with a plain blade (no serrations). Although it looks wicked and deadly, after carrying it for a few months I realized it wasn't best-suited for EDC, as there were tasks that were not easily done with this knife. Went back to carrying more standard blades (Clip, drop point, Tanto).

Amen! I used to EDC the classic Benchmade Griptilian, then I got my hands on a Mini Barrage (assisted) thinking it was the bee's knees... then I realized how much cleaning it took to keep it the AO mechanism freely opening over the course of a year-plus, and eventually made the decision to go back to the non-assisted Axis Lock.

Still love Benchmade, though.

Folders for me.

Go-to EDC is my 550-1 Griptialian (bottom)... if I'm dressing a little snazzier (and hence not likely to be doing anything to gunk up an assisted opener), I'll grab the lovely blue 477 Emissary.

For years in the staging industry I carried a SOG multi, but most often I only used the knife, and went to my toolbox for more substantial tools. I started carrying a Ontario brand Rat model2 folder. Holds a superb edge, and it's strong and well made, but still, at $50 if I broke it it's not a huge loss.

If I was to stick to folders I would strictly be Spyderco but I converted to fixed neck-knives and like them more. I have two:
1. Setup for belt only
2. For neck
This way I don't have to re-configure a knife each time when I want to carry it one way or the other.

I want a top quality pink knife. Most pink ones I've found are a rip off to reach the ladies market. Like those $2 'lady's' hammers that a piece of crap painted pink.

The pinks ones are cheap Amazon purchases, but that second from the left is a pretty good one for under $10. Benchmade has a mini griptilian on Amazon with a pink handle for $93.47.

I went down to my local purveyor, and asked about a pink Benchmade. They are only avail. from the custom shop. I did walk out with a Benchmade Griptilian, in black. Didn't need it, it just felt good in my hand.

This is an informative thread. I really need to upgrade soon. For years I carried a Leatherman but now I carry one or the other of the ones pictured below. I have a few others, mostly in drawers or my toolbox at home. I actually like these inexpensive ones for EDCs because they are utilitarian but not really valuable.

The "almost switchblade" is a no-name I got on Amazon for like $30 but it hasn't failed me in 3 years and it has surprisingly good feel. Blade came razor sharp too, and has stayed that way.

Folders of the Spyderco variety. Usually a Delica or Dragonfly, but I also have a few Manix and Para 2s in the rotation. Anything larger can't be legally carried concealed in CO, unless you are "hunting or fishing". Something like that. Even then, it's subjective based on context.
