Eden Amps

I used to own a WT 550.

it was ok. not near as loud as you would think a 500 watt amp should be, and it alwasy struck me as... fragile.

tone wise its ok, but I always found it thin.

I hated that you had this super powerful EQ but as soon as you used it, it would clip the amp and you would need to turn it down.

I love Eden amps, and cabinets. I've never liked real Ampegs, nor the solid state ones for me. I've had a WT-400 since late '97 and the first few notes I played on that amp before I bought it told me I'd found the sound I'd been hearing in my head for almost 20 years. The WT pre-amp with EQ set flat and Enhance off with an Eden D410XLT was perfect for just about 90% of the stuff I was playing and the rooms I was in. I wound up also having a D212XLT, a spare WT-400, and a WT-600 (same pre as the 400, stereo 300 WRMS/side power amp). If I was still gigging regularly (and hadn't been divorced) I'd still have all that stuff too.

However, if I was buying stuff now, I don't know if I'd get Eden. They've had some very serious customer service issues both under David Nordschow (though those problems seem to be related to the reasons he sold to USM- he didn't have enough people to do everything well), under USM (notorious miscommunications, just plain wrong information, and products rushed into production before being ready), and possibly under JAMM (they started communicating really well, but there's been pretty much nothing from them in almost a year).

And, as many long-time Ampeg fans have already reported, IF you like how Ampeg amps color the sound, you probably will not like how Eden colors it. Don't buy one just because of a simple problem with the fan- that's a pretty generic part that's not specific to Ampeg anyway and they're subject to that specific problem. Play one with YOUR bass and YOUR cabinets at the volumes you're going to use before you decide.

I too have an older 550 - great smaller amp! I use it for theatre gigs, smaller shows, or even rock gigs with the pair of 210 XST's. Punches through anything, and despite being hauled around all over, I've never had trouble with it. I use the Aggie for bigger stuff.

I did have troubles with the 800C's, and even a new 1205. A good buddy of mine snagged an older 800B and has never had the slightest problem in several years now. I think Eden lost a lot of their reputation for rock solid builds when the C series came out. That's sad, because I love the tone I get.

Covers Eden and Ampeg Tone.

P.S. And there customer service is getting better than it has been the last couple of years.
If you like your Ampeg - the fan is an easy low cost fix.

My '98 800A and '08 405 are still going strong, as is my '08 SVT-CL. :D

Yeah, a bum fan is a minor nit, unless the rest of the amp has melted as a result of it. If you want loud, clean, modern with lots of tonal range, consider Eden. If you want loud with a little hair on it, stick with Ampeg. Clean at lower volumes, you can do with either brand.

I've owned both ampeg and Eden at the same time
Ampeg into ampeg sounds good
Eden into ampeg cab sounds better
Eden into Eden sounds like GOD
But a all tube svt into a ampeg 810 sounds close to a deity

i really like my Nemesis NC-212 320w combo.. i've had it for about 4 months now and i'm very satisfied with it..

i'd like to find the 400w 810 Nemesis combo.. a fridge with an amp in it.. it's too bad they didn't put the 650 head in it..

if your amp was sent back and worked on for the fan issue, it could be that the fan was replaced with a 24v fan.. in a 12v circuit, it does not always have enough to start spinning.. and will spin at a much lower CFM.. i.e. quieter when it works than a 12v fan.. it could also be that it was a sleeve bearing fan, and has just failed..

there are many, many options on fans in that size.. look for the right voltage, diameter/depth and CFM rating.. and for a Ball Bearing type fan.. most have a 3 pin molex PCB connector on them.. also, pay attention to the direction the airflow is going.. the fan will have arrows showing the rotation and direction of the airflow on the outer frame..

I like Ampeg sound AND Eden sound. Eden Nemesis that is. I never found an Eden head or amp I like until I played an Eden Nemesis RS combo and used an Eden Nemesis. I guess they are voiced a little different over traditional Eden.
can't say they're my favorite, but i agree...i like old nemmy stuff a lot more than eden stuff.

Hey, with all the bass equipment out there you can spend your whole life experimenting with different rigs. I have. And so far, I've bought and kept an Ampeg SVT Classic (with an 8x10 cab), an Ampeg SVT 3 Pro (with a 4x10HE cab), and three, count 'em, 3! Eden heads (the WT260, a WT550, and a WT800C [with a very cool and useful bi-amp capability]) that I use in various configurations with the 8x10, the 4x10, and a lightweight speaker stack consisting of an Accugroove Tri110L, an Accugroove Tri112L, and (not so lightweight) an Ampeg BXT115 (no longer in production - cast iron!).

The Eden World Tour products are high quality, US made, and extremely reliable. I have to say that the WT260 (about 4 lbs) combined with the two Accugroove lightweight cabs is the lightest and best sounding rig I have ever played through, although it would not stand up to my main band's drummer and lead guitarist, it certainly works in virtually every other setting - AND, as a bonus, the WT260 is a great jazz guitar head as well!

Bottom line: the Eden's blow the Ampeg's away in ALL configurations. I do use preamps with the Edens, including a Demeter for the big gigs and a Tech 21 Sansamp RBI for the small gigs and studio. But even without the preamps (I love gear) the Eden's deliver. I have no affiliation with Eden or US Music. I think David Eden is a very innovative designer and his products stand the test of time.

b/t/w my basses are a Sadowsky NYC Vintage P, a '78 Music Man Stingray, and a Fender American Vintage '75 Jazz RI.

I own an Eden WT550, I’ve had it for a few months now, and I can say I love the tone. What no one has said about Eden heads, is it will take you a little time to find that sound that is you. I’m just finding mine, but man it was worth the time I took to play with it. I can get that big low end almost Mesa like sound, or punch like a GK, but with more bottom, or close to that SWR hi-fi sound.

I have been using GK for years but it seems whenever I the exact sound I want, the bassists is using an Eden head and cabinet. I am planning to try an 800 WT and possibly trade in the GK.

IMHO if your money will let you, I would not trade the GK. I still have my 800RB, and it will stay in my stable. For me GK has been my work horse before I got the Eden. If my Eden went down I would be sad, but I wouldn't miss a beat as long as I have my GK.
