Eden D610 XLT with Darkglass MT900?

Hey yall,
I'm looking around for a cab to pair with my amp (Darkglass Microtubes 900). I'm looking at this David Eden D610 XLT. According to the seller, it can be run at 4, 6 and 8 ohms. Everything I've been looking at says (at 6ohms) the cab is 1050W. I'm wondering, if I run it with my Darkglass head, am I going to blow anything? I just got this head and I really don't want to wreck it by trying to power something too big... Any advice would help. Thanks!

Not sure it’s possible to wreak an amp with too much cabinet. I had an Eden 210. It was an absolute beast and weighed @ 70lbs. What is the 610 going to clock in at? Hope you own a forklift to get that thing in and out of the truck.

DG 900 is rated 450W at 8 ohms and 900W at 4 ohms. Let's estimate how much power it should make at 6 ohms.

upload_2023-10-7_2-23-27.png You can click this if you want a bigger image.

Voltage = sq rt(Power x Impedance)
Voltage = sq rt(450 x 8) = 60V
Voltage = sq rt(900 x 4) = 60V

So it appears to produce the same voltage from 4 ohms to 8 ohms.

Power at 6 ohm and 60V
Power = (60^2)/6 = 600W

I used to have an Eden D210XLT and D410XLT. Just the 210 alone with about 250W was plenty for my needs. These cabs have a very high sensitivity rating.

The David series cabs were not low end monsters. If you try to push too much lows, you probably have enough power to blow the drivers. A high pass filter is a good idea if heavy lows is your goal.

No telling what sort of abuse the cab has already endured. It could be degraded and fragile. What is the availability of replacement drivers and recone kits? All 6 drivers need to match if you blow one.

It's going to be very heavy by today's standards.

Evaluate the risk and offer to buy at an appropriate price. No advice on a $ figure.

‘The cab is set at 6 ohm and doesn’t change unless there was a modification or failure. And if that were the case, I wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole.

As for your amp, it’s ok to power a cab as long a cab(s) that would not result in a load lower that the required minimum. For that information consult the owners manual (alway a good idea) or look on the back of the amp.

As for powering a cab rated for more power than your amp’s output will not damage the cab or amp. On the other hand, I would never recommend a cab that was rated lower than the output of the amp. Failure to comply with this may result in damage to your drivers which is a good way to get to a very expensive repair.

Eden D- 610-XLT is a beast, but has a built in dolly, like the Ampeg equivalent. There is no risk of it being too much for an underpowered amp, or the cab itself for that matter. Old wives tale.

I still use an D-210-XST. I can’t imaging what 610s would be like, and where you would play to need that much firepower Wow.

Have a good one.

The seller doesn’t know what they’re talking about: cabs are only one ohm rating, looks like this cab is 6ohm.

It’s not possible to wreck an amp by trying to power too large of a cabinet with it, so as long as you don’t hurt yourself moving that behemoth of a cab around you should be good to go! :cool:

So here's the story with the Eden D610XLT. It is indeed a 6Ω cab and you will have no trouble at all with it in any SS amp that will handle that as a minimum load. Most amps will have a minimum load of 4Ω and some a minimum load of 2Ω. With solid state amps it's safe to run any single higher ohm rated cab than the minimum Ohms load rating on the amp. When you start adding more cabs is where you run into problems if you are not careful. So your class D Darkglass Microtubes 900 will be able to run it with no problem.

The deal with a 6Ω cab vs a 4Ω cab is that a 4Ω load allows your amp to deliver its 900-watts. With a 6Ω load it won't deliver all of that 900-watts. Will "probably" deliver up to about 600 to 700-watts (NOTE***I see @Wasnex worked it out at 600-watts). However, besides the watts being used, the other thing that defines the actual sound pressure level (SPL) of your guy is the amount of speaker space pushing the air. The upshot of that is that if you are currently using a 410 cab, this 610 cab with the extra two speakers will be louder, even with just 600-watts, because of the extra speakers pushing more air.

This is one of the cabs that Eden made that could safely be used with the early WT800's that put out 800-watts bridged into 8Ω. David Nordschow (aka: David Eden) confirmed that this cab could be safely run with those WT800A amps bridged and the amp would put out 1,000 watts into that 6Ω load. He said that was about the perfect match for that WT610XLT. Note that the D610XLT version had a handling power of 1,050 watts and the later D610XST version was 1500-watts. Lane Baldwin, who was the artist rep for Eden and also ran the Eden forum until ~2010, ran two of those D610XLT cabs for years, each with their own WT800A driving them and had no problems. He later switched to David's DNS cabs after he joined David at DNA.

I would recommend taking a flashlight though and carefully inspecting the cones of those speakers for creases. Also take a good look at the surrounds. These are great cabs and really durable but buying a cab with high handling power like this used, you really need to check carefully to make sure it hasn't been abused. The speakers used in it were the Eden EC-1060XL, same as the speakers used in the D410XLT.

After Marshall bought Eden on December 31, 2011 they changed the speaker numbers and only listed the speakers for the D610XTS, which used much different speakers. The Marshall/Eden speaker numbers for them are the SPKR-7001 for the 4Ω speakers and SPKR-7002 for the 8Ω speakers, but I'm not sure which ohm speakers are used in that D610XLT. I do recall that they were wired so each speaker got the same amount of power because some other 610's didn't and kept having the two with that higher power delivery and often blew out them prematurely back then. I believe Eden wired them in pairs in series and then wired the pairs in parallel but not sure. The original EC-1060XL speakers were available in 4Ω, 8Ω, and 16Ω, so you'd have to check to see what ones were used in that particular cab if any of them are bad.

I have an eden 610. It sounds amazing and is a tonne of fun to play through, but it is permanently stuck up my stairs. I somehow got it up, and will never be able to get it down without some help. It's not just the weight (57kgs). The carry handles are in such a position that you have to lift the cab with your arms quite far away from your body. If you try to lift with just your legs and a straight back, the center of mass causes you to fall forward, so you have to heave the amp backwards lifting with your back and outstretched arms. Its pretty easy to roll around on one level, but a lift of any hight at all is a 2 man job due to it's size/bulk/design. It's such a heavy cab that the speaker grill is completely useless at protecting the cab against its own weight, and will cave in and damage the cones if you lay it face-down on a bump.
