Eden WT 550

Been searching for a new rig. Tried an Eden WT 505 with an Ampeg 410 HLF. Damn!! Serious clarity and bottom with that setup!! I didn't even mess with the EQ. Just left everything flat.

And then . . . I plugged a Tech21 Bass VT pedal into that rig, and it was SERIOUS grit - with no obnoxious fuzz. With that setup alone, I can switch from Steely Dan to Lamb of God with one pedal-stomp. No fiddling, no fuss. It would probably sound even better paired with a Sansamp RBI.

I just started playing again five months ago after ten years. Damn there is some nice equipment out there.

Only problem was that that there was a lot of hiss. I was playing an active bass, and didn't think of trying a passive. Maybe that's it . . ?

My point is, maybe someone has some heads up about potential Eden issues. Would like to hear them.

Tks.

Oh my, cringe , cringe........can't wait for the usual litany from the Eden bashers. Here's my negative feedback. I've had my WT-400 for 4 plus years of heavy gigging, indoors, outdoors, excessive heat, excessive cold and I'm really PO'd that I have absolutely nothing to whine about. Where do I send my complaints? Where can I rant? I'm furious and I want everyone to know so they don't make the same mistake I made. ;);)

Na'h it's all good for me, as with any gear some have problems and I understand the frustration when that happens. I suggest you buy from a quality store and regardless of what gear you choose make sure they will stand behind your purchase. Discuss it before handing over your money.

I'm not terribly fond of Ampeg cabs but I just lent my Eden WT-400 tonite to a friend to use with his Ampeg's. Can't wait to see how he thinks they work together. I think the Eden works great with my Epifani cab.

Yes the WT 550 has great tone and if you get a good one then you're on a winner.
I was pretty unlucky with mine- the stepped volume pots can cause static build-up issues.
My apologies to Eden fans if that puts you out. I notice that we're a bit defensive already. But that is my experience with Eden gear and the OP did ask.

hahaa I can't imagine anyone being defensive regarding Eden posts. Do a search of them here. It's like the song that never ends. I've been pretty fortunate, in all my years of gigging I can't say I've ever had a lemon of any sort from any manufacturer. Call me lucky I guess.

If I buy it (which I probably will) I'll get it from Manny's Music in NYC. They've been around for like 100 years. Pretty much a premier shop. The only thing that can help after that is prayer, my friends.

And if perhaps 1000 dollars more drops out of the sky, I'll get one of their 4x10 cabs.

Anywas, tks.

Me? No it was a scratchy volume knob- most commonly 'fixed' by spraying lubricant/cleaner. At the time I got advice that this just masks the issue and can make it worse in the long run. But I just did it and moved on (sold it).

Cleaning the pot often is how you fix scratchy pots. It isn't masking any issues that I know of. It only removes whatever corrosion or dust has gotten in there that causes it to sound scratchy.

FYI - Mannys was purchased by Sam Ash a few ago....they still use the Mannys name but are a Sam Ash in disguise...

Got a buddy that runs the bass department at a large, well known store in northern Illinois. They carry about everything bass amp oriented imagineable except Berg and he's trying to get that line in also. When all the Eden trashing started I asked him what the more dependable amps were that he carried. He said he'd had problems from all....but the least problems had been with G.K. and Eden.
I don't have a Eden head but I use a Eden 212XLT as a stand-alone, it's performed better than "ANY" cab I've ever had.

Wonderful amp, the WT-550.

I run mine at 2ohms all day long, no problems. Nice, useful EQ, but sounds great flat, and nice and warm while having clarity and punch. Just a well designed, bullet-proof amp with good features, like a great DI.

The compressor is more or less useless for any kind of real world use, but I'm not bothered and don't use the feature anyway.

I just picked up one the other day. Really nice smooth lows, had a bit of hard time finding good definition for the highs but I'm sure that'll come with playing around. One thing I did notice as well was the fan was REALLY loud, is this common?

I play through a World Tour 800 Eden head with (2) 2x10 XST cabinets. Every now & then I will get a hiss but it goes away after the amp has warmed up. Do make sure to turn the amp on with the volume turned off, that helps. The other considerations to look at will be spraying the bass pots with an electronic cleaner, new battery if the bass is active, and believe it or not if you have a computer on in the same room or electrical circuit. I narrowed my search down to the computer, go figure !!! Tone , power & bottom end ?? I just love it when the guitarist wants to play the volume game at a gig, :D GOOD LUCK !! Enjoy.

McRelly, you might try a new preamp tube to cut the hiss. I run my 550 flat. The 260 occasionally gets a little drop of mids.

Lazy1, the fan is thermostatically-controlled, so most of the time it's very quiet. I almost never hear (or feel) the fan in my 550. (The 260's fan, though, turns slowly all the time.) Have a tech check it out.

As for the compressor, I like the 550 compressor better than the one in the 260. If I hit it hard, the 260 starts to sound bad, whereas the 550 still sounds fine. My playing level is generally quite consistent, but if I dig in I notice the compressor. Occasionally I've bypassed it if I know I'll be playing hard for a solo during the set.
