I am real excited to be getting this. Finally an easy way to record the band at different locations. My question is...what extras will I need? I know a SD card is the first place I will start. For those that own this, what card did you upgrade to? I think the 2KB card (3 hours WAV) will be enough for now. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I've got one of these at work that's used primarily for interviews. Great unit, though as it's all plastic it's a little delicate. Be careful inserting the card and batteries as the door seems like it could break easily.
I'm quite impressed with the onboard mics - usually they're kinda crap but this one sounds great, and without having to take another mic and cable around makes it super portable. Very good for our interviews.
I don't know the specs on what the max card size is, but get the biggest one that'll fit and that you can afford.

I just got the biggest card I could find at radio shack. It will hold a 2 hour Practice with .mp3 bit rate.
I would recommend using the power pack that comes with it if you can. The batteries go real quick. Only last about two hours or so. The power pack line is actually pretty long.
The only other accessory to get for it really is the microphone stand adaptor. I'll be getting one later to set up at shows.

The ugly truth clears things up real quick. We plug it right into a boom box and listen to it after every practice when we have time.

I was reading where a 4gb card will last like 6hrs and a 2gb card will last 3hrs? Anyway, I want to record the band at our gigs. How far away should I expect to place the unit from the band? It arrives tomorrow!!!
Depends on how loud you are and how you have the gain set on it. It has a low/high gain swich and you can turn down the input digitally as well. So, you can jack it up for low volume stuff or cut it pretty hard for a tight room with loud instruments.
I try to get it set where the mix is best though. Too close to a bass or guitar amp and you will get more of that in the recording.
Used it last night. This thing is unbelievable! I set it near me and pointed it at the center of the room. We all kinda make a circle during practice. The bass sounded warm and thick. The drums, especially the cymbals, sounded crisp. It sounds great. If you are thinking of buying one of these, do it. Two thumbs up!

Can you post some samples? I'd love to hear how it captures a loud band.
I think it does a great job. In fact, every one in my band was blown away. I have had this for 3 days now, and each night I have had people come by and record stuff on it. It is a perfect live recording tool. Highly recommended by me! Honestly, it is the best $400 I have ever spent on anything. I am serious. You need some good headphones and a SD card upgrade, but I am completely happy with this thing. I am going to record a live wedding reception gig Sat night. I will post my results!
I use a 512M SD and record with 160kbps mp3. I use rechargeable NiMH batteries and have recorded 4 hour gigs no problem with the batteries.
I have gotten over 6 hours of recording on a charge. I have never had the batteries go dead, so I don't know how much more time I could get.

One question... could you describe how you go about setting the recording level? are you able to increase or decrease the recording level on the fly while recording? or can the recording level only be set when the unit is not recording, or if recording is paused?

When you press record once a red ring starts flashing. In this mode you can set the level without recording. When you press record again the ring goes solid and you are recording.
But you can always change the level on the fly. I have had to do this quite often.
You will LOVE this thing! I recorded a wedding gig last night and it sounds amazing. So easy to operate.
Ok guys, you've convinced me to buy this. Anything else I should know about it? I want to use it to record everything from straight jams in the basement with friends, rehearsals in our normal rehearsal room at the band leader's house, to live gigs at clubs and festivals. According to everything I've read, this unit should handle it very well. Any thoughts?
I still love mine, but am using it much less. When I first got it I recorded everything. Now I have hours and hours and hours of recordings that, quite frankly, I will probably never listen to. It is just too easy to record things.
But it is great to catch songs at practice that I want to work on. It is still cool to listen to what we sounded like at gigs. But I don't even try to record every gig now.
