Edirol R09 on the way...what extras do I need?

Yeah, I can understand that. I just think it will be nice to have a decent way to record when I want to in a unit that is so portable. I think that for most of the stuff I will record in .wav format as I want to burn it to disc and listen to on any cd player.

I bought one a week+ ago and used it twice at live performances. Recorded an outdoor concert about 20 feet from the stage which had a 4,000+ watt sound reinforcement system and everything DIed or miked. Also recorded a loud gig with one of my bands on Saturday night, this time with the recorder located on stage near my amp and the drums. I was surprised that, in both cases, the sound was decent and you can hear all instruments and vocals clearly. FYI, I was careful about setting the recording level so that the clip light didn't come on.

I particularly like being able to adjust the recording level on the fly while actually recording and monitoring the LED level indicator. You can also adjust (not on the fly though) the sampling rates for recording WAV and mp3 files. You can get a ton of recording capacity by using the mp3 format and a lower sampling rate like 128kbps.

I did a google search and came up with a few reviews but nothing that seems very recent. I found this one here that seems good, but nothing else within the last couple of months. Do you have any links that can point me in the right direction?

1. Ease of use...user interface.
2. Internal mic. Sounds better than an extrenal unless someone has found something better?
3. Gain control - love that I can set it myself. Auto doesn't always work well. It does work in bass training lessons though in a small room w/teacher.
4. It can be used for any type of recording, music, voice, classroom, etc.

Only wish it had a larger input for better external mics.

Well, I have not tried that yet but I would think that you would have to run the bass thru a preamp first especically for passive bass electronics.

Here is how I record with it:
plug in earbuds into my radio or ipod and listen to the tunes, and play out loud in-time with the music(in my ears) thru my amp with the R-09 at a distance away and make sure everything in the hosue is dead quiet! Works for me.

This is from memory, but I believe the manual mentions that the auto-gain control is meant for vocal applications. Really, do you want the recorder trying to make all the music have the same level? You would loose all dynamics.

Ok, make sense. I'm really looking forward to getting this little guy! I really hope it takes good recordings of my gigs. I bought the mic stand adapter to go with it. About how far away from the stage should I set this up?

I've done this with no problem. you don't really need a preamp because you can increase the input gain on the r09 so that your bass is loud enough on the recording. You'll need a 1/4" to 1/8" jack adapter.

I also want to try this input method with a drum machine or CD player like this: bass and drum machine => combo amp, then take a line out from the amp into the r09 and record away! use the combo amp as a live monitor as you record. I'll let you know how it goes once I get around to it.

Any of you guys that own this thing buy the case and stand? I bought the unit and the mic stand adapter, but didn't realize I needed the the case to hook it to the adapter. Everybody is sold out of the case and stand kit and they are on back order for months. Any ideas how I can mount this thing for recording my gigs?

I use a simple clip that screws into a mike stand for mine. I wrap the power cord around the stand just to be safe, but it hasn't fallen yet! I, and the rest of my band LOVE this thing. I even go to other musician friends houses and record them. Then I give them a CD of it the next night. I have recorded 2 of my gigs so far with this. The first gig I set it near me so I could record and separate between songs. This turned out great! We have a 2 CD live album now! Last gig, I was kind of in a corner and just let it run during the set mostly. I set it dead center in front of the drummer, but couldn't reach it easily to pause it between songs. We ended up with 3 hrs of songs on 7 tracks. :hmm: Quality wasn't as good, but it wasn't the recorders fault. Next gig, I am setting it up in front of me (and the high hat side of the drums) and using the monitor in front of me to pick up the vocals and some of the guitars. This is what I did on the first gig. Anyway, this thing seems kinda fragile. I dropped it after the first gig on to the stage. The side guts popped out. I was almost suicidal thinking I had lost the entire show. The female singer in my band asked to look at it. 5 minutes later she gave it backed to me fixed! The show was still on there! I also dropped it last Wed night after recording at my buddies house. It still works flawlessly! Maybe I should stop drinking, I dont know.... Anyway, like another guy posted, you start recording everything. I do. It is so easy, and sounds really good. :D

I usually just put it down somewhere close by ;)

Because of this, I tend to record one set per mp3. I record using the 160kbps mp3 format. Here is the output from one 4 hour gig. r09_0002 is missing because it was just a level check.
