Educate me on Sunn amps..

Gang, let's remember that wattage does NOT equal S.P.L. Wattage ratings are a measure of efficiency and power consumption, and can be measured in different manners- think SWR watts vs. SVT watts. S.P.L- sound pressure levels- is determined by both efficiency of the amp, speaker cone surface area, speaker design, room acoustics, and many other things. Now, with that in mind...
One of the loudest amps I've ever played through was the legendary Sunn Coliseum 880, sometimes referred to as the Entwhistle model. Through a single 15 Mesa cab, it had my pant legs flapping on 1. I tried to get it to 2, and it was just too much
. Not clean, had some breakup when you started playing hard on the E string (prolly needed new power reserve caps, no big deal for a Sunn...), but, gaw-damm!, the ceiling tiles were jumping. I can only imagine the destruction of an 880 through an 8x10 cab. And, the thing was about 3 feet wide on top of the cab, could've used it as a lunch counter.
The Coliseum 880 was rated at 365 watts at 2 ohm, which makes it one of the most powerful amps of it's day, back when 5% harmonic distortion was cutting edge. If you find one, buy it! Same goes for any of the grey face/ mid 70s Coliseums / Concerts.
Oh, and let's not forget that Sunn warrantee'd their products for life....

it was mentioned earlier that all the guys in Red Fang play Beta Leads - not entirely true.

They do sound killer, I'm suprised there's not more info out there - thinking there just might not have been that many of them out there to begin with.

I have a Sunn Coliseum. It's extremely loud. The preamp isn't all that great, so I use a Peavey and preamp it to the coliseum. Works great. You better have plenty of speaker. I use 2-18's in a folded horn cabinet. Rediculous bass and sound....but I love it.
The preamp on the Coli 300 is a little strange compared to normal preamps. It's based on cutting instead of boosting so start with everything maxed out and cut away frequencies to get your tone.
That's also how you get the most volume out of it. If the preamp is all at 0 you have no volume at all.
i have a concert bass head on sale if anyone is interested. very nice grind, not a lot of volume IIRC 200 watts. old tube amp i had in the 70's was nice, also not very powerful 60 watts?
