effects not playing nicely together

It's the daisy chain connections from the supply that complete the main loop through which the noise travels. Isolating the power for each pedal breaks that loop, reducing or eliminating the noise in most (not quite all) cases.

To be clear, it's not the wart itself that is "isolated", but rather the pedals that need their power isolated from other pedals. So you can do that by using batteries, or separate wall warts for the "problem" pedals, or buying a brick-shaped supply with isolated outputs like the Voodoo Labs PP2. Note the Dunlop Brick does NOT have isolated outs.
 
That was the point of my question. It seems to me that isolating the power supply side doesn't actually break the noise loop between the pedals since they are always connected via signal minus / casing earth, which is commonly the -ve of the power also.

I am a bit at sea with this level of electrical discussion, sorry about that.

Cool cat has a buffered byoass ( like I know what that means, I know what a true bypass is) Assuming it's the source of the nois, how come only the GR reacts when all the rest play nice? And yet the GR plays nice with all the others, proving the culprit is the Coolcat, I think.

The aim is to only have 1 path for ground/earth currents to flow. The moment you have 2 paths, you create a loop. So yes, the grounds will (almost) always be connected via signal cable shields, it is the addition of a common power supply ground that creates a 2nd ground path, thus a loop is formed.

Note: This may or may not be the cause of the problem you are experiencing... electronics can be pretty random!
