What kind of bass are you playing? Do you you currently play with a band? With this kind of music (screamo?) a lot of the end product is very studio driven. When I could hear the actual bass, it sounded fairly unaffected.

Very few bassists in bands like this (that I know of) actually use effects to acheive their sounds. Its normally clean bass through a tube head like an Ampeg or Orange.

If you have a totally clean head, then a light 'natural' sounding overdrive might be what you are looking for. And maybe a compressor
