THE ANATOMY OF A MAGNABASS PICKUP. I just got my eBay replacement magna bass pickup 
I had read a conversation about this pickup before, I can't remember where. It's design is a bit weird. It's a split coil, but only because it's missing some pole pieces. I have a broken one, so I've got the extra poles to transform this split coil into a dual coil if I want. Has anyone done this? and can they talk about the results? I don't want to tempt fate by prying the pickup out of the casing, but if it's awesome I might try it

That looks like a Magnabass III pickup, right? Those sound awesome.
In any case, I don't think adding pole pieces will do much if you don't wind wire around them, too.

I was working in a music store that sold these. Well, I think we only sold a couple of them. Pretty cool idea that was ahead of the technology. Chris Squire used one; I forget the album, but he used it on tour.
But the reason I stopped in here is this:
Spectrum LX. I actually had forgotten about this bass. I bought it in the late '80s to use as a beater/back-up, and it's been sitting in its case in a back room for about 15 years. The reliced finish is from it being set on fire (long story, Jimi did it better). It does still play, but could use some new strings.
The wire DOES already go around.
Cool bass Les. I've been shocked by how great these Westones with the Magnabass pickups sound.

Four?! Good God, man!
I think I sold the fretted neck on eBay. I do remember the bass sounding good, and at the time it was in rotation it was backing up a fretless Jazz. I liked the rosewood 'board on the Westone, and yeah, those pickups were pretty versatile. It deserved more respect than it received; am glad to see others are fairing better.
Does it deserve a number?
I was given number 52, so I suppose that would make you 53, although I'm not the "hander outer" of numbers here.
yeah 4. But when I can get 4 for less than what most folks spend on one boring ass Fender, yeah. I'll take four. I've spent between $85 and $210 for all my Westones. that $210 was for this Thunder 3, 5 piece neck through, as high quality as anything else I've played, much nicer than all the high dollar basses I have owned.

You did a nice job on your natural wood "refinish"; that's really sweet. Just for the fun of it, I looked at some on eBay today, and was surprised to see as many as I did. I think mine is the only one I've seen in person, and didn't realize they had such nice looking models.
this one just sold. It's gorgeous, looks mint and priced fairly with an awesome case. Although it's more than I have paid I had still been watching it.

Dan Adams, that would be me. My first Westone bass. I've had a few Westone six-strings over the past few years. Just took up bass playing a few months ago. I saw the Genesis on ebay and simply couldn't resist. I have been playing an Essex P- bass until yesterday, when this beauty arrived. A few minor dings, otherwise perfect. Plays and sounds amazing. Figured I couldn't go wrong with a Mats Westone. Very happy indeed. It ROCKS! May I now become an official member? I know, I know. Pics! Not my strong point, but hopefully I can figure out how to post pics over the weekend. Great Club!

I'm currently building a bass using a Spectrum LX fretless neck I got on eBay. Really a quality neck! (and a great concept package!)

A buddy of mine in DC does hip hop stuff and asked me to play bass on one of his tracks last year. I forgot where this was posted on soundcloud but just found it. This is my Spectrum GT bass played clean through my Ampeg pf500 rig into a mic'd pf210he cab. This was recorded in the guitarist's house.
I'd always been mostly a rock guy and never played hip hop before, so this was a new experience. Simplicity and dead-on timing are key (and I can hear where I screwed up, of course). Hip hop is all about the beats and the vocals, so playing busy won't work; instead I think of the bass here as "drums with notes". Ben, the vocalist, set up the sampled beats and asked me and my guitarist buddy to work with him on it because he wanted to use actual musicians instead of just samples. Since the drum beats are from a machine the toughest thing for me was to get in the groove and stay in it, while consistently plucking each note and not getting too sloppy.
I thought the Westone with its thick, hot pickups and clean growl was the right instrument for the job. I hope to do more of this in the future. Plus for at least one song I got to be in a group called "Ceti Alpha V". How cool is that? Well, it matches my current avatar!

Hello to all.I bought a Westone thunder 1a bass.It's not in good condition but I want to fix it. I'm looking forward for a replacement neck ( I prefer fretless).The old one was in bad condition and i'll try to fix it. I remove the frets but now i have chips on my fretboard. I put rosewood dust and epoxy glue. Although I prefer to have one factory fretless or in good condition.
