Electro Voice EVM-15L in a TL-606 Cab

Wait a minute, the DL motor is different than the EVM motor, so just because an EVM kit might fit doesn't make it an EVM. The TS parameters are sure to bequite different. IIRC, the motor strength is greater with the EVM, and something tells me that the DL used a taller winding height, so the Le would also be different.
Judging by the pictures on the data sheets they might share the same motor. You can't be sure, as the DL EDS lists the plate thickness and coil depth but the EVM EDS doesn't. The coil is definitely not the same, since the DL xmax is 5.6mm, the EVM 3.3mm. The cones and suspensions are very different. Neither is competition for a modern high end driver, but of the two I'd rather the DL used with a midrange driver to the EVM, since it would take two EVMs to match the low end output of a DL, and a six or eight inch midrange is going to beat the highs of the EVM in both extension and dispersion.
What would be nice is a fifteen that has the low end output of the DL, mids closer to the EVM, and while we're at it, 1/3 the weight. There is a driver that's just that, the Kappalite 3015.

Cheers for all this info.
I think I'll have to revisit my plans.
I have several DL15W's that need reforming but the spiders have sagged probably due to holding the weight of the cone with no surround.
Has anyone got any thoughts on these in a TL606 cab even if they are fully reconed.
Cheers Mark

I beg to differ the Electro Voice B115M had a 15L in it . one of the best bass cabs ever. with a vented midrange that cab was killer

EVM 15L's in TL606 cabs were great back in the day. ProCo sound use to market a 2x15 based on the TL606 (not exact but very, very similar volume and port specs when you consider they had 2 drivers per cab) that were the foundation of many great PA's, bass rigs, and keyboard rigs. I use to run 4 2x15 and 4 1x18 cabs (plus EV horns) as my bass rig (scaled down as appropriate). Even running a single 2x15 the low bass was strong enough for 70's and 80's Rock and Roll. My practice amp (and large rig pre amp) was a B25 driving a TL606 with an EVM15L. Great sound.

Spiders don't sag from the weight of the cone (internet myth with modern drivers), they become damaged due to overexcursion, which tears the fibers within the woven material.

I used to have a Mesa Boogie Road Ready 1x15 (which is a TL-606 design cab) loaded with a 400 watt EV Proline 15L speaker and it was not of this earth good ... you'd be hard pressed to do better with a 1x15. Thump, tone, projection ... it was all there in spades. Also there in spades was weight ... it was a total cinder block which, as I became old and decrepit, was the only reason I ever sold it. The market seems to be leaning towards portable and lightweight ... especially with speaker cabinets so the weight issue would probably be a negative factor in selling it.

It may have been a good cab but the data doesn't lie. In a TL606 the EMV EDS show the 15L at 90 dB sensitivity at 95 Hz, rolling off below that, the 15B at 90 dB sensitivity at 70 Hz, rolling off below that. That's a 25 Hz advantage to the 15B. In the upper end the 15L 90 dB point is 6 kHz, the 15B 90 dB point is 4.2 kHz, just what you'd expect for a driver intended for guitar as opposed to one intended for bass. Why they used the 15L with the VMR when it was crossed over at 600 Hz is inexplicable.

Specs only tell a part of the picture. The 15Bs sound awesome for a certain sort of mid forward (but pretty smooth) vintage sound. But it seems unlikely you'd get that by using the wrong kit for a recone. Hey, I'll just take this JBL 2226 and recone it as a D130F, what could possibly go wrong?

I found my 15B could go way brighter than my preferences. But I could get it down to where I liked it very much, w/EQ. No experience w/the 15L, but am pretty sure I would not like it nearly as much as the B. I also found it quite efficient. After the rebuild, I swapped it out for the stock 4 ohm speaker in my GK MB115. The 8 ohm EVM was noticeably louder, and sounded a bit better, despite the cab probably being too small, and the porting not optimal. Never gigged it, but played it enough to get a bit broken in. Very sweet mids for sure (I HATE honky mids). Now it sits in my closet, awaiting me to build a 606. Sadly, that looks unlikely.......my back and hip require ultra light gear these days :banghead:

I used to sell many EVM15B's back in the 80's and they are terrific bass speakers. I always felt that the 15L's (more of a PA speaker) lacked personality for the bass guitar. I still have a Theil aligned box with a single EVM15B in it that sounds great: used under my GK MB150 combo it can easily do a rock gig.

Mark, aren't you over sea's? Heck I could probably build it (have a large workshop, and the skills) for less than shipping! Thanks anyways. In any event, like I said above, I have to go ultra light these days. That kind of drains the motivation to build one.

Ok might very carefully dismantle one to see if I can very carefully free the spider to replace it with new.
If not I think I'll recone
Not going to happen, you simply can not dismantle without destroying it. Reconing is the only way to successfully repair this.
