Electronics for Musicians?

Guys and Gals:

If I've learned anything here it's that I don't know 99% of what I should regarding what makes our basses play and what makes the amplifiers work.

Any suggestions for a practical course in simple,simple electronics for musicians would not only be appreciated, but could be quite lucrative for anyone who put it together.

The reviews of that book are mixed, mostly it sounds outdated although as they say the theory portion is never outdated. That web page links to a couple of other authors you could consider as well. I've been a working electrical engineer for nearly 40 years and I have a hard time judging what would be good references for a beginner, especially since I don't even teach beginners. You certainly don't need to know everything I know or most of what I've forgotten. I would suggest that you look at continuing education classes at local community colleges or high schools. There is probably a course you could take at one of those for a modest fee and your fee most likely gives you a lot of freedom to pester the instructor with electric instrument specific questions. He/she probably would not even mind. Sounds like an opportunity for Guitar Center to fill a void, or perhaps they do and I've never noticed. If you have one nearby ask them. Or ask at the local mom and pop stores. At least one of them should have a tech who could be convinced to give you some pointers or even teach a class.

You might want to check out Craig Anderton's "Do-It-Yourself Projects For Guitarists" Link Removed

I don't have that one, but I had an earlier version and read his column in Guitar Player.

The FAQ for the Amps Forum here has many excellent technical links, but I'm not sure how many are geared toward genuine novices. Anderton's books are not too bad that way IIRC. I tend to send friends to my local library, which often has some really good beginner texts and can get most anything else in short order.
