electrovoice sro 15 speaker

not too long ago I rescued a 2x15 from the garbage with SRO's in it :) Like a dummy I didn't know about the 4spoke-8spoke and put the back panel back on the cab, maybe I'll take the umpteen screws back out and look to see if it had 4 or 8spokes.

yes billy-B, when the back was off I took a pic of one of them. The cab itself is intact/split box and the speakers sound fine but the cloth grill is trashed and the wood that holds the speakers got wet at some point and is warped at the bottom.. The place was throwing away a bunch of old gear, some cables, an old soundcraftsman and carvin SS PA amp that dont work, a huge old NEI mixer that hums and a peavy and soundcraftsman EQ that I didnt check out yet..

On the same topic does anyone know what the deal is with the Old EV 15" speakers with the chrome plated frame and the hammertone can on the magnet. That was one of the best 15" drivers I ever heard. Too bad it was stolen by a shady landlord.

Kinda like this picture but I think it had a darker finish on the "can" and I dont recall the can being that big.

I have an old EV catalog at home. If I can remember :( I'll look when I get home later today.

Google search mentioned it having a wizzer cone...

yeah the one I used to have didn't have a whizzer cone. I have always wanted to try that out. I almost bought a whizzer cone model off ebay several years back, but it got bid up higher than I cared to pay.
Those old EV's were made with magic glue or something. I've never heard any modern or vintage driver sound as good with a tube head. Except maybe those white frame Gauss 15" drivers.

Here are the cabinet designs that EV published in 1969 for the SRO15. The 2x15 version was called TB-1, cut it in half and you have a TB-3. I have no idea what a TB-2 was (if it even existed).

My first real bass cabinet was a TB-1 loaded with SRO15s (driven originally by an early '70s Carvin B3000 head and later a Marshall Major). That was a great rig I never should have parted with!

Here's the SRO15 loaded rig from a photo I took in 1976. The top cabinet is a TB-1 laying on its side (the reconed speaker is on the right). The bottom cabinets are TB-3 that belonged to my bass teacher (who I bought the Carvin and TB-1 from).

When I was originally buying it, he offered me the choice of either the 2x15 or the pair of 1x15s for the same price ($100, a lot of money in 1975-76). He quickly rethought that and offered only the 2x15.

That rig was LOUD...I'd put it on my parent's back porch, crank it up and kids from the school playground almost a half mile away could hear me (or so I was told).

BTW, the head was $100 too... I had a choice between the Carvin and a Traynor (the 160 watt tube head). If I had that decision to make today, I would have chosen the Traynor.

Zombie thread alert!!! ...and a major shout out to @BillyB_from_LZ.

OMG, I've literally been looking for years for these EV plans and somehow stumbled onto this TB thread from 2012. They're same plans that I used circa 1971 to build two 2x15 cabinets, also my first real bass cabinets. Now thanks to BillyB I know I'm not crazy, the plans did exist and the cabinet was called the TB-1. All I could remember about them was how similar they looked to 2x15 Sunn cabinets but without the angled port shelves.

Back then I loved them loaded with EV SRO15s, sounded much better to me than with some JBLs I tried. The SRO15s had much better mid-range presence. Once or twice they blew and I would have them reconed and keep on using them. Fond memories.

I used the two TB-1/SRO15 2x15 cabinets until I bought two new Acoustic 370/301 stacks in the mid 1970s, but later on I put them back into service with a Furman PQ3 and BGW750 driving them. Whoa! They finally got relegated to the PA and used until the plywood TB-1 cabinets splintered to bits from being manhandled.

Thanks for indulging my trip down memory lane. As you were!
