Eliminating finger noise in recordings?

Hi!

I'm wondering if anyone has a way to eliminate that annoying finger noise sound when recording. It sounds like a top end click, and its mainly present when using a p-bass, playing fingerstyle. Also, the fingers are not hitting the pole pieces, as i have covered pickups (no exposed polepieces). It's not that present live, but in recording, its a real bitch. Is there a way to eliminate this sound without sacrificing top-end?

Off the top of my head:

• Don't use new strings.
• Fiddle with the EQ till ya get it right.
• Adapt your technique till you get what you want.
• Try a different bass.
• Try flatwounds.
• Learn to appreciate the string noise as IMO it adds to the mix when it's all done.

I record with new strings, roll a bit off the tone, and pull a little off the top end while raising the low mids. Add bass and high mids to taste in the song, and you have my recorded P-Bass tone!

Depends on the types of strings you're using, but some get noisier the older they get.

You can only do so much in the mix--those noises are really just a technique thing.

some string noise adds to it, and makes it sound more natural. It adds a little bit of the human element when that happens so you know it's not just some MIDI file overlayed with a VSTi.

Using a parametric eq, narrow the bandwidth "Q" until it would resemble a spike if it were graphed. Sweep this frequency around 3.5k or so until the string noise disappears or lessens, leaving most of your bass signal intact, high end included.
