EMG Pickup Installation Question

Im thinking about replacing the stock pickup in my Ray 34 with an EMG MMHZ pickup.

I know that the connections are solderless, but I'd be looking to swap out the preamp as well with a John East and so I'd need to use the John East preamp volume pot. Given that the John East preamp is already assembled upon arrival, I'm thinking that installing the EMG might be a little tricky because of the solderless connections. Now, I think it would be fine if I just stripped the connectors off of the end of the pickup connector, but I'm not 100% sure it would work without the volume pot that comes with it.

Anyone have any experience or ideas with EMG pickups that might help me figure this out?

If you’re going with the East preamp, you might be fine with the stock pickup…

To answer your original question…Yes, you can remove the quick connector and make the connections with the wires. The HZ pickup is passive, so it’s not necessary to use the EMG pots, other than the convenience of the quick connectors.

I actually watched all of Low End Lobster's videos on the Sub Stringray mod series and loved the tone of the EMG, that's what made me want to get one, but yeah the stock preamp just sucks.

I believe he’s using the EMG BQC preamp with the EMG pickup.

John East is a brilliant electrical engineer. I've used passive or active pickups with his preamps without having to change out the volume pot. On his preamps, just hook up the pickup wires. John East thought about everything when it comes to his preamps.
