EMG Pickups for Warmoth Hollow J Bass ?

Hi...I am presently waiting for my Warmoth Bass giutar parts to arrive. I have had it routed for EMG's.

The bass is a hollow J bass with a Wenge body with a Bubinga laminated top.

Neck is Bubinga with a Ziricote fret board.

I allready have two basses, a Fender Zone Bass and a Ibanez Prestige 5 string with Bartolini's.

I want this one to sound different.

Can anyone offer suggestions on EMG pickups? What would be a good choice here?

Quite unique woods, i wouldnt go for EMG that have a very imposing sound. I would choose something that allow a more woody tone.

Why "for sure"? This is the kind of bass i would love to hear in the most natural way possible.

PJ set in soapbars imo.

I also would argue that passive pickups don't necessarily sound more natural than actives.

First, I heartliy disagree with the "imposing tone" argument against EMG pickups. In my (limited) experience EMG pickups sound more neutral and nautral than most conventional passive pickups I've tried.

I also have a Warmoth J, and mine has regular EMG J pickups. You can see and hear it here.

But for more versatility I would also suggest the PJ option. The great thing with the EMG Extended series is that you can very easily change the pickup to try out different types (J, P, DC, CS).

I have a Jazz Bass with a Warmoth mahogany body that has EMG J pups in it. It has a very nice hi-fi, clear, piano like tone. It's quite heavy though, which has something to do with that. Warmoth makes real good stuff IMHO.

I've put EMG active pickups in a couple Fenders. I don't find them to be sterile, have too much top end or sound imposing. They actually sounded very good and were an improvement over the stock Fenders.

dennq- you said you've had it routed for EMGs. If you had it routed for J type pickups, there are a lot of other brands that will fit. If you had it routed for the EMG soapbars you still should have some alternatives that will fit.

I say active because EMG's active series is great and the active part does not make it anymore imposing than a passive EMG. Their sound is amazing.
