EMG selects?

can anybody with expeience tell me what these pickups are like? i'm looknig to put them in a bass im making, nechthru- bubinga body warwick style bass. I'm looking for a big full punchy sound. Consideruing the JAZZ set or possibly 2 humbuckers.

thanks
winston

I put an EMG Select P-pickup in my Yamaha RBX250 sometime in the nineties.... it sounded better than the stock pickup, more high end and a clearer sound. But this is a while ago.

But I'd recommend, if you are building a bass and want it to sound good, don't try to save money by buying the cheaper EMG Select pickups. Get good stuff. I can heartily recommend proper EMG J pickups, which I have in my Warmoth bass.

For the price, EMG Selects are hard to beat. I have them in my Jazz bass, and they sound pretty good. However, if you are building a neck thru custom wood bass, I wouldn't skimp on the pickups. I'd look into EMG actives, Nordstrands, or any other high end pickup company.

I have one in my P and it rocks! It is higher output than my SD Quarter Pouinders I have in my Geddy Lee. Very good, solid, and punchy sound. But I agree with above posters - if you're going to that length, put better p'ups in.

I have had Selects in a couple of basses.

They're great.

I sold my Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pup set in favour of the Selects, and also prefer them to the Seymour Duncan Basslines that were in a bass I recently sold......

There are no "good" or "bad" pickups, and I don't agree that because you're building a custom bass that you should put something "better" in.

Note that people have said that they like them, but because you're building a custom bass you should put something "better" (read more expensive) in. I'm afraid many people get suckered in by the "it's more expensive, and therefore must sound better" myth.

The tone, quality and construction of the EMG Selects is excellent in my opinion. Well, actually I'll say that it's my opinion that the tone is good, because the idea of perfect tone differs for the individual, but I don't believe that it can be stated that the quality of construction and finish of the pickups is lacking. They really are nice.

I think you should try them. If you like them, leave them in. If you don't like them - get something else.

:D

Amen brother!

I put a set of selects in a Yamaha RBX 270 I like them a lot better than the stock pups, and they were a bargain in this bass, as stated earlier though if I were building a custom bass I don't think I'd be using them. don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with them. I just see them as a repacement pups for more entry level instrument
