Empress compressor first impressions

Maybe I’m late to the party, but I just picked one of these up.

Really a marvelous little piece, and my biggest problem is trying to decide which settings I like the most..

-an exceptionally useful range of attack and release times.

-dry blend is always a great feature, and it’s executed well here.. this does a great job at the ‘over compress it then blend in a lot of dry’ sound, but it REALLY shines when you blend in a *tiny* amount of clean to a wet sound that’s already very usable. you can really go between a chewy smooth compressed effect and a subtle fattened natural tone with just a little bit of clean blend.

-obviously the metering is out of this world. Not only is it very responsive, and not only does it give you as much visual feedback as you could possibly need, but the way you can see the effect of attack and release time visually represented in the meter.. it’s teaching me more about compression and helping me to hear it better and dive deeper into my ear’s relationship with my envelope.

- the input level, which adjusts your signal about a fixed threshold, is a useful enough range for me and my instruments on hand. The metering makes getting this right super easy, and you can really fine tune the response with a comfortable turn of the knob

- the tone + color circuit .. well both of them sound very very good. The harmonic coloration it adds is really really nice. But I have to be honest, it irks me a bit that in order to use the nice saturation color that you must also choose either a mid scoop or a bump at 2k. It’s honestly kind of forgivable since both of them sound so good.. the frequencies are well selected and the effect is very musical, but in principle it seems weird. I’ve had luck adjusting those frequencies back to normalish, but I’d rather still just have the nice color.

- the sidechain HPF, if you don’t know, removes some lows from the envelope detector circuit, which essentially makes the compressor less reactive to lows. This works very effectively, it really gives an open bottomless feel.. but here’s the thing.
This ALREADY SOUNDS SO DAMNED GOOD IN THE LOWS. Maybe it’s personal, but I’m always so annoyed by choked lows that a dry blend and/or sidechain HPF is necessary- but in this case the natural response of the comp to the lows is SO chewy and round and fat. It makes me never want to just the HPF again unless I just need to be unbridled and huge.. but if I’m riffing, my low end sounds better than ever, a series of fat sonic plums.

The only other factor that even approached a Con about this pedal is the relatively tame ratios- to me 2:1 is so low and subtle, my first reaction is that 4:1 8:1 and 16:1 or something would be a better range… but man, the 10:1 is a LOT of squish, 4:1 is really a perfect sweet compression, and I bet the 2:1 is the perfect subtle barely there compression that ANYONE could use

I’m tickled, Empress really knocked it out of the park, and managed to stand out in a field that is already bursting at the seams with impressive pedals these days.
 
I use the old version. I insert a stereo jack in the side chain with a capacitor (I forgot the value) to set the HPF around 80hz, plus I have a real HPF at the beginning set at 40hz. I noticed that setting the compression to show the input led adds a small amount of noise in the signal but it disappears if I use just the output leds instead. These 2 pieces of ‘equipment’ are a must in my setup.
I’m wondering about the sound difference between the old and the new compression version.
 
After a couple of weeks my biggest issue is still that the whole range of sounds you can dial in are too vast.. I’m unironically considering keeping the pulp n peel on my board for that squishy chewy effect, just to remove an option from the Empress.. good problem to have!

i’ve mostly been trying to use it in that “miss it when it’s off“ sweet spot. Like most compressors there have been times where I turn it off and feel that the dry tone is better, but unlike other compressors I can tweak it slightly and it’s back to the superior tone. In other words, it’s highly adjustable and the range of adjustment is very musical.. The problems are from user error and heavy handedness, rather than me just being tired of compression.


I’m still pretty irked about the tone shaping being locked to the ‘saturation’

It’s to the point that I really may go through the trouble of opening it up, tracing it and modding the circuit. The upper mid bump sounds good, but when I turn it off I feel better about it. The lower mid scoop sounds very good , but when I turn it off I feel better. But then I miss that VERY VERY GOOD harmonic distortion. it’s maddening, and both tone settings really sound good enough that honestly I can deal with it, I just really really wish upon a star Santa baby please give me that harmonic distortion without a distinct mid contour.

and to be fair, I think their approach may have been that both of those tonal shapes combined with the harmonic distortion are meant to be a specific character, including the saturation… Hell honestly I don’t even know if both sides use the same ‘distortion’ . The low mid scoop is really just a fantastic detailed base sound, and the high mid bump setting does a fantastic version of anything punchy or aggressive, including just a pretty well rounded bass tone that’s a little middy.. it sounds AMAZING with a pick, and with a fusion Jaco/janek kind of sound as well.

Yes, but I don't know if the non bass mkii is actually bad on bass. The bass version has a sidechain knob instead of fixed freqs, and a harmonic distortion plus mid contour switch. But no tone knob, which the regular mkii has. I don't know if they are tuned differently on the inside, or if only the controls differ.

I think I'm OK because I have since found this:

The HPF can be toggled off or set to 120Hz (left), off which is full range (center) or 240Hz (right). This is a huge plus over the original Empress compressor design if you are a bass player because you can adjust the circuit such that it reacts less to your E or B string, for example. I recently reviewed the Empress Bass Compressor, another new compressor design. That device offers a fully variable pass filter instead of a switch. As a bassist I can conclude that I prefer the fully variable dial over the 3-way switch but the switch on the MKII is certainly useful and a nice feature.
The main differences between the MKII and the Bass are the EQ/Tone control and the HPF. On the Bass, the EQ is a mid cut or a mid boost or nothing. On the MKII it's a tilt EQ knob centered at 500hz. The HPF on the Bass is a variable knob from 20 to 400hz, and on the MKII it's 120, 240 or off.

I can see where the Bass features are marginally more useful to a bass player. But these are also features I do not have on my MXR and I'm not sure I'd use them at all. My gut reaction is that I probably won't.

Well I can see that this unit is a winner after just 10 minutes. I have very moderate attack and release times, 4:1 ratio, every note gets at least one LED, loudest ones get a nice stack of em. I have to keep the output down around 9 o'clock, though, this thing is so hot. That's to achieve just a hair above unity gain. It sounds invisible, which is exactly what I want. I'm running it 100% wet and zero tone adjustment and no HPF.

One weird thing, though. My pancake patch cables barely fit next to the power supply. I got it to go, but it was worrisome for a second.
 
Here's one thing I don't get. The whole HPF part. The idea that you might want one part of your signal compressed while letting a different part through unaffected makes sense. But I would think you'd want the lower half compressed and let the upper parts through, not the other way around. What exactly is the thinking here? One of the things I want out of comp is "unity bump" in the 200hz area, everything the same volume there.

So what is affected is the triggering of compression, not what is compressed. The Empress only does full freq range compression, but the hpf can adjust how it is triggered. Think of it as another form of input level adjustment.

Ok, this makes much more sense. Still, I wonder what this does for your sound? It's compressing everything, but only in response to the peaks of a subset of frequencies.

@scottfeldstein The Empress Bass Compressor II replaced my MXR M87. The MXR M87 is highly regarded however it didn’t produce the sound I was after, I felt it squished my sound too much. Good thing is there’s a right compressor for everyone.

Regarding the HPF on the Empress, I believe you described the control affect in the opposite manner from the way it works (which is the exact way I initially interpreted it). The manual states the HPF function controls the range of frequencies that pass into the compression circuit, the control allows the user to set the low frequency range that bypasses compression. This is exactly why this compressor works better for me than my previous one, we can adjust the HPF so the lowest frequencies don’t feel strangled.

From the manual:
“The SC HP (high pass filter) knob can be used to avoid triggering the compression with high energy low frequency notes, which helps avoid over-compressing and keeps the low frequencies sounding full while still controlling errant high notes that pop out.“
