So it sets the frequency that you want to bypass compression? Allowing you to have a compressed signal while not squishing your lows?

No, it's not on the audio circuit, it's in the compressor detector, it's not allowing your very low frequencies to trigger very hard the compressor and squishing all the signal. The compressor is working always on all the spectrum, but the compression is not triggered by the very low notes (on my 5's is very effective).

Not exactly — the whole spectrum is compressed, but the compressor won’t be triggered as easily by low frequencies. Perhaps think of it as a separate threshold control adjustable for frequency rather than amplitude.

It bears repeating in different ways maybe.

The side chain HPF filters out low frequencies from the compression DETECTOR path, not the parallel audio signal path. The frequencies below the frequency set by the knob don’t go through the detector and don’t trigger compression on the (unfiltered full frequency) audio signal path.

I just got an Empress Bass comp again and wow it's great. I don't remember my first one having holes in the bottom plate, this one has 4, one in each corner. They're in addition to the screw holes and are obviously factory made as the blue sparkle isn't machined away. But it's just four holes right to the innards of the pedal. I don't recall seeing anything about the holes and nothing has come up in my search. Are they all like that? What's the purpose?

To access the internal dip switches, I had to slice the edge and lift it up with tweezers
