As stated I think all the materials have an effect on tone. My current endpin does not allow me to use a solid wood pin - 3/8 is too thin. Bear in mind the difference is subtle, not noticeable w/amplification but the feel of the bass changes when I switch endpins. What I think happens is the wood is part of the dampening effect as is the rubber tip, as opposed to a solid metal endpin/rubber tip. Aluminum is a softer material compared to steel, so this may play a role too. If I was performing on a stage I would try the metal pin with the sharp point to add floor coupling.
