Entry level= $700? Really????

Can somebody help me figure this out? My "entry level" Ibanez cost me $169 and MSRP is $200. MSRP for the Fender Modern Player Jazz is $699.99. Fender's site says it's an entry level instrument. Several people told me that an "entry level" bass is one you get when you start taking lessons, it doesn't cost a crap load of money and you can gig with it if you want but by the time you start gigging you will have modded it, replaced it or acquired a second better quality bass. Is a $700 bass really an "entry level" bass or is my perception of "entry level" off?

Maybe it means entry level for that model/series.

If your kid wanted bass lessons would you be willing to drop $700 on their first bass? I've been playing for almost 3 years and as much as I practice and as good as I am and as much as I want to make a career out of playing the bass, my parents won't even talk about a $700 bass with me unless I start with the words: I'm saving up for a $700 bass.

No, but that's a good price point for someone looking to upgrade from a beginner bass.

MSRP is $700, but street price is around $500. Not too bad, really. And these would be Fenders entry level line, being their lowest priced models. If you want to go cheaper, Squier CV and VM are great for the money (or just great, no disclaimer necessary, really).

I believe they mean entry level into a FENDER bass.

Throughout its history, Fender® has always made a special point of welcoming new players to the family by offering entry-level instruments of remarkable style and substance (such as the Duo-Sonic™, Mustang® and Musicmaster® models), with great sound, classic looks, solid performance and eminent affordability. The Modern Player series continues that great my-first-Fender tradition, with thoroughly modern features and several distinctively unconventional new takes on our most revered instruments-all with outstandingly attainable value.

Key words: MY FIRST FENDER.
$699 is the Manufacturer's Suggest Retail Price. At Guitar Center, these are $499.

The Mexican made Standard Jazz Basses are $599.
American Standard are $1299.

So at $499, the Modern Player IS the entry level to a Fender branded Jazz bass.

Nothing more to it.
