Envelope Filter 2019

Hi all,

And yes I did a search give me a break.

I wanted to know so far in 2019, what is your fav Envelope Filter.

I'm playing the MXR89 (I think, the very dark purple thingy) and I don't like it that much. There is only one setting that do work, the moment you get outside the sweet spot (in the 15% near completely open) then it is unusuable. It is just awful.

I know it isn't an evelope filter but I played the EHX Bass microsynth and meh at best, everything kinda sound to same to me.

So I'm looking at the EBS bass IQ ... but I already have 3 EBS pedals and want some variety on my board. But the one I have work so well.

Thanks all

I think it might depend on the ole' budget. If I were to put another filter on my board, I'd be saving up for a 3Leaf Chromatron. That filter looks AH-MAZING! Spencer has always made incredible filters though, that's kind of his thing...

I still want to try the Chromatron. So far I’ve been through maybe a dozen filters in the last few years. The 3Leaf Wonderlove V1 and MuTron Microtron III are the sure survivors.

Wonderlove is my favorite, and the MuTron does what the MuTron does. The MuTron makes the board more because of the small enclosure.

I currently have both Source Audio Manta and EBS BassIQ. BassIQ sounds analog (organic but little lo-fi like analog choruses do), has easy and decent controls, albeit you may want a power supply with variable voltage (it acts as one more control).

Manta is another beast. Digital synthy sound, many controls, tricky to dial in, unique design that incorporates a compressor before auto-wah (evens up the quacks), two presets and tap tempo on board. I like them both, but if I could have only one, that’d be Manta.

Meh. I’ve never dug Spencer’s filters. They barely quack. And I like the quack.

Mr Black Fwonkbeta has outlasted my Mutron, Q-Tron, 3Leafs, and more.

You’ve gotta be using it with a limiter right? I loved the sound the of the Fwonk but I couldn’t control it to save my life.

My two choices would be Broughton Joshwah and Mutron Microtron III.

My experience with the EHX BMS was the same, it was amazing ho repetitive it sounded.

I'm a (modded) Moog filter lover myself.

Iron Ether Xerograph and JoshWah are cool for sure.

Meris Enzo has a very good filter arsenal too.

EHX !Q Balls is also a good choice.

I have been through a number of filters. I now have a JohnK Mutron III (with Moog switch), a 3leaf Proton and, for the third time around I recently picked up another Aguilar Filter Twin.

I always dug the filter twin but for one reason or another I never gigged with it until my last gig. I guess I always looked at it as a bread and butter pedal... does a good job but not a flashy as many others.

BUT, in the live setting is where the Filter Twin really shines! It is very predictable which, for a filter, may actually be one of the more important attributes. I have had other "better" filters that were finicky at crunch time, maybe due to some live tweaks on my bass or interaction with other pedals... well, some just fall short in a live setting even if they sound great in the practice room.

So, my answer to this thread... and my recommendation is the ol' Aggie Filter Twin. The third time for me was the charm, this pedal will stay on my board for the foreseeable future.

This thread needs some pictures...

I also have a Xerograph deluxe and the external Expression pedal jack makes it that much better . Not going to knock my Fwonk off my board but they share space on my big board. Both useful both quack and both can do different things. I have had a couple of 3 leaf filters I was not impressed but would like to try the new one and see what the deal is. It sounded like there was some quack in one of the videos I saw but I can't remember what one.
