Envelope Filter 2019

Despite it being 2019, my favorite is still the DOD FX25. After owning about 5 different versions I finally got an original , though I found them all close enough to each other sonically.

A close 2nd is my Source Audio Manta, which I have dialed in to replicate the FX25(the other side is funky phaser).

I have very high hopes for the new Source Audio One Series Envelope becoming my number 1 as it can do envelope, legit sounding synth and a whole lot more. With 3 presets I see it becoming a permanent fixture on my board.

I also disliked the MXR envelope filter. I liked the Q-Tron+ a lot but felt I needed a dry blend with it to keep my low end present in the mix.

Aguilar Filter Twin is what I recommend. Every setting sounds good and usable. It never loses any low end. Sounds almost like it’s got a touch of dry signal going through so it never feels like you drop out or spike too hot when engaging or disengaging the pedal mid-song.

Not super quacky, but man, the Aguilar Filter Twin works so good in a band mix, and plays well with other pedals.

I’m using the 3leaf Chromatron. It’s just a beautiful sounding envelope effect, insanely versatile and intuitive. It’s also really well thought-out. The effects loop and the foot-switchable expression really solve a lot of the problems one might have with a typical envelope filter.

Hi all,

And yes I did a search give me a break.

I wanted to know so far in 2019, what is your fav Envelope Filter.

I'm playing the MXR89 (I think, the very dark purple thingy) and I don't like it that much. There is only one setting that do work, the moment you get outside the sweet spot (in the 15% near completely open) then it is unusuable. It is just awful.

I know it isn't an evelope filter but I played the EHX Bass microsynth and meh at best, everything kinda sound to same to me.

So I'm looking at the EBS bass IQ ... but I already have 3 EBS pedals and want some variety on my board. But the one I have work so well.

Thanks all

I sold my MXR Bass Envelope Filter last week on Reverb. Just wasnt for me and sounded better on guitar, if I'm being honest.

Right now my favorite modulation pedal for bass is the JHS Unicorn V2 (Univibe clone). Tried it just see what it would sound like and it sounds awesome!

The MXR is on my board now and although I agree it kind of does one thing, it does it very well imo. Plus, I don't like to play with the knobs live so that works well for me.

I had the EH Microsynth and although I liked what the sliders did, the sound was too muddy at all settings for my taste.

I'm looking at the new 3 leaf audio one that replaced the wonderlove deluxe at the moment, and the mutron mini looks interesting.

I quite like the Proton and MXR. The Source Audio stuff is great, but took up too much space for me. I also quite like the tone of the FX2B, but it requires a limiter for its crazy spikes, and the space issue prevents that.

Good luck! I find filters to be a very personal effect.

I use the MXR BEF and Xerograph Dlx v2 on my board. I have to agree the MXR only does one thing, and even more when you see how people set it everyone’s is set almost the same! So yes, a one trick pony, but it is very good and reliable trick. Plus I find I like it after fuzz too.

I have to wonder what the utility of having more than one sound in an envelope filter really is. Are you really going to do a bunch of knob tweaking between songs on stage? Or are you mostly a studio guy so you need the versatility?

My solution to the different filter sound problem is to use multiple EFs. When I was still using a PT Pro I ran 4 filters, including the Manta, so really 5 different filter tones to choose from.

The FilterTwin gets an honorable mention for situations where I want a less pronounced, more textural filter. I just got a BassIQ and I could see it working the same way, but as for real “quack” funky filter sounds I feel it too only has one useful sound. Either of the normal settings, up or down, end up being pretty subtle in a band mix; only the HiQ setting makes a statement.
