Envelope Filter 2019

I'm more into autowah than filter, so I guess the perspective is a bit different. After trying many (most are listed in my profile), I couldn't help but go back to the venerable Digitech Bass Synth Wah. It can do decent filter sounds and a whole lot of wacky/unusable other sounds, but modes 1 and 2 are where the meat is for me. Granted, this pedal is not everyone's cup of tea, but then filters are such a personal choice.
I thought autowah and envelope filter were two names for the same thing. What's the difference?

What's a set-and-forget filter that's small; easy to use; sounds more like a fat, smooth Moog than a quacky Mu-Tron; and is readily available? My budget is around $300. The new 3 Leaf Proton? Fwonk? Joshwah?

I tried the Spectrum before. I felt it was overwhelming. Maybe I should give it another go?

None of those other options sound like the Moog. Only option I can think of other than the Spectrum is the Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe.

It's only got 4 knobs?

Barge Concepts MB-1 and Chunk Systems Agent 00Funk mkii have been on my board since I bought them in 2011. They're just so thick.

Added the 3Leaf Chromatron last year which is superbly built and very versatile. Just picked up a NOS Octavius Squeezer and am very stoked on it.

I do need to eventually get a Moog and a Mu-Tron III. The IE XD and MB Fwonkbeta both sound killer as well.

Thanks for all of your insights...I've been lurking on this thread because I'm filter curious. I've bought and sold 2 filters already (MXR M82 & Seamoon Funk Machine...both not for me, YMMV).

I put an offer in on a Fwonk Beta (always wanted a Mr. Black pedal) and if that falls through I will look at the Proton V2 (which is somehow newer than the V3?). I like that the Proton v2 can take 9 to 18V. I always see that as a good sign in a pedal.

I've had the Wonderlove, Chromatron and Micro-Tron. The original Protons are based on the Wonderlove and the new 2020 Proton is based on the Chromatron.

I hated the Wonderlove. The Micro-Tron was cool. I loved the Chromatron, but it was a tad too big for my board (PT Nano+). I sold them all and regret selling the Chromatron. I contacted 3 Leaf Audio a couple of days ago, and they said:

"[T]he new Proton is pretty much the same circuit as the Chromatron but with some controls removed to make it smaller and easier to use. The Proton has a fixed fast attack control that, while it doesn't allow for as many different sounds, makes the pedal much easier to dial in compared to the Chromatron. The Proton also has a wider range to the tone knob. Whenever I get around to doing another run of Chromatrons, I'm going to modify the tone knob to have the same range as the Proton - it's a really nice change."

I should be getting my new 2020 Proton tomorrow :)

I bought a modded (frequency-split) Bassballs here (thanks, T6S!), and I gotta say, it's one of about 8 I own and it's now on my live board and staying there (along with the EBS Triple IQ and the Pigtrnx Envelope Phaser).

I keep 'em pretty subtle for live use (and use these that way recording). When I wanna go nuts, the Source Audio BEF is the go-to, followed by the Manta.

I'm still trying to find the Aguilar for a good used price, tho', as I love their octaver.

Hang on to that Grinder. Talk about RARE...

Any happy Mooer Envelope users? I want a cheap pedal and I'm debating between it and Digitech BSW. I like both but at the moment I'm gravitating towards Mooer simply because I can't stand the feel of those Digitech switches on that line of pedals.
Anyway, mostly curious just how volume spike-y is Mooer.

Do let us know which one you keep. I was hesitating between the two and went with the 2020 Proton.

I looked into the Proton a little deeper when I found out (if I'm understanding correctly) that the v3 is older than the v2?

Does anyone know the story behind this?

From what I understand, the V2 is a simplified Chromatron, while the v1 & v3 are Mu-tron III clones?

Feel free to confirm or deny my half a**ed findings.....

I think version 1, 2 and 3 are older models based on the Wonderlove as the manuals on the 3 Leaf Website all have the old logo. The 3 Leaf Website doesn't have the manual for the Doom 2, which was released a few months before the latest Proton. I assume the latter, which is based on the Chromatron, is version 4. I should be getting mine today. I'll let you know how the manual looks.
