Envelope Filter - Advice Please !!!

Hi guys,

First of all this is my first thread here so please cut me some slack here if I do anything wrong.
Ok... Im seriously thinking to get an Envelope Filter(ish) pedal. These are some that definitely on my list
- Emma Discumbobulator
- the Q-Trons (preferably the + one)
- Toadworks Enveloope
- Moog Low Pass
- Pigtronix Envelope Phaser (I know... its not really an EF but its kinda interesting)
Any suggestion ? Or any other options maybe ?
For ur information I play a Stingray 4.

Can't really comment much as I have a distinct lack of experience with lots of them, but as far as I understand, the toadworks isn't actually an envelope filter... it switches to an effects loop depending on your envelope.

A search on any of those will turn up lots of information, otherwise 2 that have come up lately a few times are the toneworks 442 and the DOD FX25. Also probably worht a search. The Chunk systems 00funk seems interesting, but some people have had issues with sensitive controls.

To help you specifically though, some idea about the sound your going for or examples from recordings ought to help everyone make suggestions.

Right, obviously you'll want to search on "envelope filter" here, there's lots to read. Also, as jucas points out, the Toadworks is not a filter. The Pigtronix, on the other hand, IS a filter, in addition to being a phaser. Another one to look at is the Ibanez/Maxon AF-9. And, repeating jucas again, it will definitely help us to know what sort of sound you're after- the more specific you can be, the better. Name some particular songs if possible. Then we can get somewhere. :)

Ah ok2... sorry about the toadworks.
Well Im definitely after the Mutron kind of sound, but some people told me that the newer version (the plus one ??) is not the same with the original, and the original is just way tooo expensive and difficult to find here in down under.
Seriously considering the Emma thought... any comment ?

Thx for the comments

Oh yeah Bongomania... great compressor review btw.
Im thinking to get one as well since I think its time for me to leave my multi effect setup (Boss GT).
What do you think about Analogman's ? which one do you personally recommend ? Especially for active bass such as Stingray

What's your budget? FWIW it's true that the reissue Mutron does not sound the same (to me) as the original... but what is it about the Mutron sound that you're after? Is it the "famousness" of it, or the "dirtiness", or the "liquidness", or the "Bootsy used it (along with a zillion other filters)", or...???

Well Im hoping to spend around 200ish US so anything like Lovetone's Meatball is way out of my league.
I kinda after the liquid dirty sound, but most importantly I want to retain the low end (and the real sound of the bass) as much as possible.
Im open to any advices or comments.

Since you mentioned an Emma, I can comment on that one since I use one and like it very much. It is nowhere as "greasy" and "squelchy" like a mutron or lovetone, but it still lets your bass sound like a bass which is what you said you wanted.

It is very organic and natural sounding which is what I was after. It is like night and day compared to the more severe envelope filters. Try it out, it might be what you're after.

Well, have a look into the Chunk Systems Agent 00 Funk.

Also, check out the Tone FACTOR 442, not Toneworks. Have a look at EHX's Qtron line. They sound great, and I think anyone who uses a filter can find something they like about a Qtron. ALso check out the EHX Bassballs. It's a different sound, but it's pretty cool. The DOD FX25 is a cool pedal, but not quite "greasey". Also, if you can wait a while, Subdecay is working on their filter, which sounds amazing.

There are all things to keep in mind. Try searching around, and you'll find exactly what you want ;-D

I highly recommend the Mini Q Tron (not the Micro version)

The Mini is so simple and sounds fabulous. I paid $95 Canadian for mine new and it is a great drippy warbly filter with all the mojo you could want. Highly recommended!

There is an OZ produced unit called Frostwave that's expensive as heck over here - maybe you can get a local deal ?

I've been through a bunch in the last year. I have yet to try the Emma but it's on my list. I personally would skip both the Moog and the Mutron. They are extremely touchy for live use. WOnderful sound when dialed but - a 1 mm tur of any know in any direction and yuck ... way to densitive for live use.

I'm back to a bassballs on my board and will re-visit the eneveloe question after a while.

A lo-fi but cool (not natural and organic sounding though) pedal is the Ibanez SB-7. I consider that selling mine was a mistake ... My old one is flaoting around Singapore with Superkicky somewhere.

That's a cool pedal! I'll be snagging another of those.

please don't tear my playing apart too much(only been playin a year and a half) but here is a clip of me using my mini q-tron playing bits and pieces of buzzards of green hill by les claypool, this is just an idea of how the pedal sounds
