Envelope filter/follower addict support group

I can confirm that the DOD FX25 and FX25B do indeed sound different, despite the only difference being (rather, supposed to be) the addition of a blend knob.

Same family for sure, but they sound different and react different from each other. The FX25 is a little snappier at first then a little looser, it's also deeper and has more bass. The FX25 B is a little smoother but with a sharper high end and respond a little move "chewy" to a harder attack.

They are both starting to grow on me, but still, I think the best use for these might be behind a fuzz.

The DOD 545-A arrived today, and it's a blast. It's thick and juicy, has a nice pop and a very sensitive "attack" control - in a really, really good way. So far it seems pretty unique - with the attack knob rolled back, it's almost like a bowed envelope filter - the attack happens after the swell. It's pretty cool.

The 545-A might be the sleeper hit out of the bunch.

BTW, the only difference between the 545 and the 545-A is the footswitch - the A is newer/better.

DOD pedals are so inconsistent that you really have to try them out to find that Goldilocks one of the bunch. I have a couple that are okay, they were acquired on the cheap so I didn't care so much. IME the Digitech BSW is a real sleeper and a pedal I have bought and sold more than once.

I finally got some time to sit down and make some recordings.

Since I have quite a few filters to try, I decided to separate them into two groups - Mutron-like filters (i.e. those filters that are trying to cop a Mutron sound, use a similar circuit, etc.) and Non-Mutron filters.

All recordings made with a stock 72 Fender Jazz bass thru an Audient ID USB interface directly into my Mac.

First up is the OG Mutron III. In the track I start and end with the settings in the pic, and in the middle played around a bit with the knobs - it will be obvious in the recording.

My take? After playing the Mutron and thru everything else, there's nothing quite like the OG Mutron - the way it responds, the crisp OD when you turn the gain knob up, the chewy-ness - ain't nothing like it.

Enjoy!

Edit: I need to set up a share for the files, will post later tonight.

Okay, sounds samples of the first six are here - Public - Google Drive

The names are self explanatory :-) Forgive the playing, I was just noodling around for every track. I started each with the settings as shown in the photo, then tweaked some knobs around - some with good effect, some with not so good effect, but I felt like instead of just playing what sounds good, I would show what it sounds like across the range of the pedal.

I'll comment and post more later in the week, but until then, LMK what you think about each one.

That was a lot of fun to listen to!
Hard to beat that first clip.

I'm going to post a few more at a time (I really do need to get this done so I can sell a few, the filters are adding up and I have my eye on a few more); once I'm done posting them all, I'll add my thoughts on each one and do a write-up/comparison. It IS a shootout, after all!

Tonight we've got the last (I think) of the MuTron-alikes. I uploaded samples using the Maxon AF-9, the MuTron MicroTron IV (with the blue optical card), and a John K Mono U MuTron clone with vintage optocouplers. Initial settings attached to this post. Public - Google Drive

Allright allright allright ...

Tonight I've got three filters - but four samples! I also swapped out my 72 Jazz for a Sadowsky NYC Will Lee.

We have the Line 6 Otto Filter, and the DOD FX25 and the DODFX25B. The last file features the FX25 and the FX25B head-to-head so that folks can hear the differences between the two. I start with the FX25, then pause for a few minutes, and then kick in the FX25B with the exact same settings. Every time you hear a pause, it's me switching between the two, and I do it several times during the sample as I mess around with the settings.

As always, initial settings are in the pics below.

Next up are some modern envelope filters, plus one more vintage. I also have a Chunk Systems OO Agent Funk clone on the way.

Enjoy!

The last vintage one that I have (for now) - the DOD 545-A. Due to the way that this pedal works, you'll find quite a few "swells" after hitting a note - these are from the pedal, I'm not touching or moving any of the knobs, the swell after the attack is how the pedal works (pretty cool if you ask me!).

OKay, last one for tonight. This is the 3 Leaf Proton Mk 4.

Public - Google Drive

I have to pull my GR2 off of my board for the next round, but I'll probably wait for the Chunk Systems clone to arrive and do them both the same day. as well as the envelope filter in my Spark. Until then, enjoy!
