Epifani UL310 or UL410?

Well, to follow up a little further. . . .

I've had some more time with the 410UL and the more I hear the more I like. I don't know why I thought the tweeter was so difficult to make out, but perhaps I had my wacky iAmp eq setting engaged - the one that I used to try making my iAmp+GB210XB rig sound like an Ampeg stack :confused: . In any case, I had a few minutes by myself this weekend (having three kids under the age of 4 makes this surprisingly difficult) and got to experimenting with the cab and the tweeter settings. I could dial in all of the fret clicking I wanted, but even when it was unbearable for me it never sounded truly harsh, just not to my liking. The cabinet never comes close to complaining even when the lower frequencies are boosted to stupid levels. My jam this week was cancelled, so I won't have the pleasure of trying it out at gig volume for at least another week. As a side note, my band likes to play louder than I generally like, but that's one of the reasons I like my custom fitted Etymotic Research earplugs which are now the SECOND best piece of music equipment I own - expensive, but cheaper than the average boutique pedal and far, far more important!

I can't imagine needing more power in any situation that I'm likely to play in, but of course that doesn't stop me from wondering how cool it would be to have double or triple that watts going into it :D . I can't imagine this cab not working for anyone, but I guess there are dozens of cabinet manufacturers out there for a reason.

had a chance to try both a UL310 and UL410 in philly @ bass specialties, and forgot how incredibly huge the 410 can sound. just massive compared to the rental 4x10's i had been stuck with these past few days. :cool:

still, my heart will always be for the UL310. fits so easily in places that the 410 cant, i.e. crownvic taxi trunks, and power thru most any marshall halfstack.

but glad the UL410 is working out for your bacon. just dont get the UL115 to put underneath. dont!!! :p

Exactly man. Great practice sound. I didn't use it on the gig though and I can see how it might be lacking power. I bought a 4ohm UL410 so I'm gonna stick with a one cab setup. I've got a big gig this weekend. We'll see if I made the right choice.

I'm with Joker on the 310. It's such a great little cab that it's become a go-to piece of gear for me.

I love the 410 as well although I don't personally own one. I've played through that paired with a 212 a bunch of times though and it is a pretty amazing rig.

I'm thinking of getting a 610UL now. I've got a pair of 112's and a 310 which cover almost any gig that I do. A 610 would be indulgent but I think it would be a cool addition to my collection. It will be great when I finally get that stadium gig I've been waiting on!;)

i've been on the fence back and forth, back and forth on getting one. :rollno: but once you hear one, its nearly impossible to get that sound outta your head.

If I were to give up the extra volume of the 410 to get the 310, would the 310 fit in the back of an average sedan, or better in the trunk? Anyone have any experience with this? I cant fit my Berg 2x12 in the car and besides, I nearly break my back trying to lift it into the car (and I bench 280lbs!!).

You are describing my life! The 310UL will fit in almost any backseat, but will not fit in most trunks due to its deep depth. If you don't need massive volume, the 310UL is a wonderful cab, and at 47 pounds, it is just a dream.

I find the only large, light cab that can do a massive volume gig and still fit in most trunks and all back seats is the Schroeder 21012L or 410L... they are only 16" deep, which makes all the difference with backseats and trunks. They are about 62 pounds.

A 310UL fits perfectly in the back seat of my four door Accord. It's a hair to big to fit into the trunk - but it's really darn close so if you have a deep trunk you might be in luck.

I've never actually A/B'd them directly - next time I have two 310's and a 610 here I will certainly do so though.

In the mean time, I can say from memory that the 610 feels like it has a little more mid push than a the pair of 310's does. The pair of 310's feels a bit more open and wider sounding. They're both really, really good rigs though with heaps of excess available volume.

That would seem correct, and describes the difference also between the 410UL and 310UL. It seems the more speakers you cram into a cabinet, the more 'mid present' that cab gets. That's why many companies 210's sound 'wider and deeper' than their 410's, and why the 410's sound a little fuller and deeper than the 610's.

From my understanding, it has to do with the number of speakers versus the internal cabinet volume ratio. The larger that ratio is (speakers to internal cab depth), the more 'mid present' the cab will sound... all other things being relatively equal.

I've actually never heard a 610 that I particularly liked for this reason.

Actually this theory doesn't seem to stand up if you look at the cabinet measurements on the epifani web site. In actual fact the cabinet volume per driver is almost exactly the same with the ul310 and the ul410 (about 1% difference). The ul610 has a larger volume per driver than the ul310, about 7% more.

I think a major reason for the difference in the sound is the fact that as the cab has more drivers they are further from the floor. This reduces the boundary effect, resulting in less bass and a perception of a more pronounced midrange. To state the obvious, cabs are acoustic devices. Their response is heavily influenced by their surroundings, and with bass, particularly by close boundaries, ie the floor! FWIW I greatly prefer the sound of my ul410 on it's side, it gives me the more extended low end I'm looking for. The difference is pronounced to my ear.

Anyway that's my 2c theory and I'm sticking to it until Bill tells me I'm stoopid. ;)
