Aside: I'm sure this is a rare mistake, but my Novak mudbucker's color code was wrong on its four conductors. Don't remember which. Watch out for that.

Epiphone Newport looks like a winner.

Unfortunately, I have the same problem. Although not that pronounced. Couldn't hear it at home. But I was in the practice room today and there it was. So, would simply grounding the pickup case help?
Well, it won't. It happens, what I kind of expected, the hot wire will be grounded as well and the pup is dead. Has someone an idea how to fix this?
I definitely like your Newport mod. I have a Rivoli so I don't need the mudbucker at the neck, but truly love the simplicity of your design. Moving the single pickup to mid position eliminates the string striking problems some have mentioned.Me too. So I came up with this Newport mod. Shouldn't be too difficult.
Are you planning this or have you already implemented? Did you fashion that pickguard to cover the neck enclosure or is it something I can find premade?
Put a Hipshot 2 point SuperTone bridge on it and it would be perfect short scale simple thinderbird style player.
Just my thoughts.
Have one of those also...one of my favorites. However, I think the Newport would be a great addition with that Thunderbird pickup. 
Umm, where do I start...

Added the HipShot 2 Point Bass Bridge...perfect!
Those Artec mudbuckers open up a bit if wired in parallel. They have a DC resistance of around 7.5 k ohms in parallel, so should play nicely with the bridge pickup as well.
The DiMarzio Model One (BP120) has been around since the '70s, designed precisely as a drop-in replacement for the Gibson mudbucker. The wider-spaced version for Sheehan's Yamaha Attitude (inspired by his use of the Gibson pickup on "the Wife") was the BP145 Will Power Neck (now discontinued, I believe, and replaced by the Relentless Neck).
The Supertone 2-point bridge has a screw spacing that is wider than the hole spacing on the Newport. The spacing of the holes on the 3-point bridge seems compatible but not the string spacing nor the intonation, although I didn't try to do a backwards installation as a workaround. I corresponded with Hipshot who told me that they don't have a bridge suitable for the Newport. YMMV.
What you say is consistent with what Lobster apparently experienced; this apparent compatibility is what prompted me to order the Hipshot Supertone 2-point bridge. The one I received had center-to-center screw hole spacing of 3.25 inches whereas 3.38 (approx.) was needed at least on my bass. And as I said, the Hipshot people confirmed to me that they don't have a bridge to fit the Newport: they have a D style bridge with 3 5/8 inch spacing, and they confirmed that the 3-point has the right spacing but not the proper intonation.
It doesn't seem plausible that different examples of the Newport have different screw hole spacing either, so I don't have an explanation for the different experience. Anyhow thanks in part to this bridge issue but mainly due to a fret problem, my Newport has been returned to the retailer.
