Being short scale,how do these basses go tuning down half a step?

"In 2004, Fender issued the Fender Jaguar Baritone Custom (later renamed "Jaguar Bass VI Custom"), which is more or less a combination of the Bass VI and the Fender Jaguar. The Jaguar Baritone Custom uses the same string gauges and tuning as the Bass VI, but differs in that it has a Jaguar-shaped body, two pickups with Jaguar-style switching options, a fixed bridge, and a shorter 28.5" scale length."

So, if standard strings still play ok with 28,5" chances are that nothing will really happen if you detune your bass. Just try and be the judge. Maybe you need higher tension strings, but that is all.

I just bought an epiphone eb-o and was considering putting the lowest 4 strings from a 5string set on to compensate for the lack of tension as a result of the shorter scale length. Might be an option for you too?

I've owned one(and several other semi-hollow short-scales) for years, the strings are already pretty "floppy" tuned to pitch, I'm sure they would be even more so tuned down.

These basses sound muddy and undefined enough in standard tuning. Dropping it a half step will disappoint.

The BEAD tuning though does work on Fender scale basses. Several people in town are running it. The statement was from one that they manted the lower range and so seldom played "high" that missing the G string was no loss.

I was talking about using the BEAD strings with EADG tuning. Or EbAbDbGb as the case may be.

I'm an avid short scale player. And I tune down half a step on all my basses.

I've been using GHS Heavy Boomers on these basses.
Those are 115 - 50 gauge.
Works perfectly. Gives you just the right string tension.
