EPIPHONE SG

I got one used years ago for like $80. I kept it for about two weeks. Hated it. Horrible, horrible tone. Just unusable in my opinion. I toyed with the idea of putting a mini humbucker in near the bridge but felt the bass just wasn't worth it.

I have an eb3. I have a love hate relationship with it. I love the feel and look of it but hate the neck dive and thumpiness of it. I have been trying to sell it on craigslist without luck. I would love to get a mim jazz, yamaha or ibanez for it. But I keep getting offered crappy beginner basses. I really want an ibby ir yammy with p/j pup configuratuon.

Then again I might hang onto it. I dont know.

I picked one up recently for cheap and am modding it to an EB-3. I was surprised by how much the pickup sounds like the Gibson originals--very beefy, though perhaps just a touch more microphonic. By lowering the pole pieces a bit and using flatwounds I am able to get a nice, smooth even tone out of it. The best feature is probably the fretboard--frets are very level and smooth playing. Otherwise, the overall quality seems very acceptable for a bass in this price range. Oh, and surprisingly well balanced--no real neck dive to speak of.

I have two of them, and a Gibson.

I added a Jazz neck pick up at the bridge of this one & the neck pick up is from my SG

You must be carefull with these as the ones that come in the starter sets are not even up to the marginal quality of the ones sold by themselves. I have been told the one I purchased was made out of plywood.

I picked up bass after a 38 year break and the bass I purchased was the Epy EBO. I all ways wanted the Gibson when I played in the 60's so I purchased the EBO on a wim.

I hated it. The tone was mud and you could not get a good set up. I kept it for one month and then sold it. The only good thing about it was that it got me playing again and after all these years I'm back in a band. My bass, a Peavey Cirrus 5.

I love my Epi SG. The neck is super fast and has great low action. I put in the Model One neck pickup and a SG-style mini-humbucker (had to route out the space for the pickup and new pot/knob), and couldn't be happier with the sound.

Also, there is a design flaw with this style bridge which seats the strings across the bridge saddles too close to the ball ends. If you have this bridge, look closely and you'll see that the silk/wire wrapping part of the string is right over the saddle. Do fix this, I run the strings through some old bridge saddles and seat the saddle between the tail piece and the ball end. Because of its cylindrical shape it fits right in the tail piece, and acts like a spacer so the wrapping does not sit across the bridge.

I'm thinking about getting one of these later today. I don't mind Gibson bridges. I don't mind that it's muddy and not versitile. I think they sound great.

Does anyone know if the nut slots can fit fat strings? like 110-50?

Also, it's got a really thin neck right? Could it stand up to the tension?

I have an EB-0.

I agree with you on the tone, some hear mud but I hear old school thump. The bridge is kind of wonky, but not completely useless. I may upgrade to the Hipshot down the road.

I don't use heavy strings, but if I did then I think the neck would be able to handle it. The neck is thin, but not super-thin, about the same size as my CIJ Mustang neck.

If the one you're looking at is made in Korea I'd definitely pick it up.

I got a $250 gift card from GC and I've always kinda wanted one of these. The newer ones are made in China, right? Are those perceived to be of lower quality?
