EQ advice

Hey tbers,
Trying to eq a bass track at the moment. Sound I'm going for is a 70's J, neck pickup, tone up, played with a pick..
Guitar heavy rock track, and I'm just looking for that pick style mid to cut through..
Any ideas on the best way to get the tone punching through the mix without cranking the volume too much?

Hardware or software based EQ?

In either case, assuming it's at least semi-parametric; Grab a band, heavily boost it, and if possible assign a very narrow Q. Slowly sweep up and down its effective range until you hear the center frequency you're after. Now adjust the boost to a more palatable level, along with possibly widening the Q to catch some of the frequencies on either side of the approximate center you've chosen. It's really that simple, and there is absolutely no one specific answer that will work for a given situation. Even identical gear will respond differently on a different track, in a different room, on a different mix, on a different...

Someone said that lowering volume in the other tracks at the preferred frequency is better than raising the volume a lot on the instrument at that same frequency. Trade off happening between kick and BG, usually. Rhythm guitar or keys might figure in, too.
Works for me.

The VST's I use for bass punch are Native Instruments "Solid Dynamics", Native Instruments "Supercharger", Brainworx "dynEQ v2",BBE D82 Sonic Maximizer. I run those through IK Multimedia's Invalid Link Removed I have a SVT but those Ampeg models sound incredible and I actually prefer using them.
