EQ or preamp pedal?

Hey guys, im looking into buying a pedal that will give my amp abit more balls, and better tone too.

Ive had the sansamp pedals in mind like the tech 21 vt bass pedal and the sansamp bass driver di pedal. BUt i want something cheaper.

I had maybe an EQ pedal like the boss geb-7, its kinda a different pedal but will it do the same thing as the other pedals like sansamp and stuff? Will it enhance the sound quality of my rig and give it more balls?

Hi there Aussie :)

Well - that's gonna depend on the tone you already have.
Think amp, cab + bass all together.
If those fundamentals don't get an already desirable tone, you can work with it.
I have both an EQ and a Sansamp.
An EQ will help to cut any annoying frequencies from your tone, but I wouldn't want to boost too much, you'll only increase any hum/hiss etc in your signal chain.
I personally use the EQ with an Overdrive pedal in a loop together, before my wah.
The sansamp I use last in my chain, as a preamp, as I otherwise don't have one at all.
The Sansamp will get you a few nice tones - but it will need patient tweaking to get it right, if your fundamental tone isn't quite right.

EDIT: The sansamp can get quite dirty when you want - and has a blend knob - so it will get a lot more differnt sounds than an EQ. But if you only play clean, or already have dedicated idrt pedals - the EQ would be the cheaper option.
Good Luck.;)

i had in mind, the boss geb-7 and the sansamp tech 21 vt pedal

i use that combination. i have the vt set to a slightly like a flat mids tone with little boost to bass and treble which gives me solid my slap bass sound for the finger style tone i have the mids on the GEB7 upped with a slight dip at 10k to get rid of a little finger noise and clank.
i was on a tour recently and the sound guys loved my tone at every venue. had no issues being heard in the FOH system too :hyper: get both! vt first :bassist:

I can't quite explain how and what it does, but it does good wonder to you bass sound. Check it out at store, too.

Aphex Bass Exciter
Basically it's a bass/treble booster. OK if you like that kind of thing, but probably not what the OP had in mind.

I love the VT pedal and I've heard really nice sounding stuff from someone using the Linden. The Boss EQ is a pretty popular pedal and it can add some balls, but for sheer ball-adding power, I don't think the VT can be beat for under $200.

Thanks for your correction.:o

Thanks heaps! been a great help, about a yr ago i bought a behringer bdi 21 preamp modeler pedal, was good at first on my basic passive bass, but stopped using it, i recently got a Cort B4 active bass and tested it out with my behringer pedal, the pedal distorts pretty bad, with the active eq, its like it cant take it, unless i turn down the treble, mids and master on the cort preamp, but it sounds crappy anyway, wasnt too bad when i first bought it.

I think i'll go with the vt pedal first, then if i feel i need it, i will get the boss eq pedal. I havnt done too much bargain hunting but i can get the vt for about $250 AUD which isnt too bad. I hope im on santas nice list.
