Equal???

Just in terms of "is it an equally good idea", yes--absolutely. No problem, good approach.

If you really mean "equal in all specifications", literally, then no. Different box sizes and tunings produce different specs. Plus it depends on which specific 210 and 410, since they all have slightly different parameters.

But in regard to, "is it an equally good idea," I disagree with your assessment. My belief, & I know that of many others, too, is that the often mentioned 2 x 210 setup, stacked on their sides for a "vertical" 410, is a far superior format to that of the square 410.

My current gig rig is a 210 combo. I've ordered the matching 210 extension cab and once it comes in I will be finding out whether or not this is true. By having all the drivers vertically aligned I'll be able to hear myself better, as the topmost driver will be closer to my head then it would in a 410 configuration. As for resolving phasing issues, I will hook up my trusty wireless and walk the room and see.

A very emphatic +1, for all the obvious reasons: modularity, drivers closer to ear level, better dispersion, yadda, yadda, yadda ad nauseum.

Truth be told, I started vertically stacking my 2x10s when I bought my GB STM900, just because I thought the smaller head would look cooler on top of a taller, narrower stack. Purely an aesthetic decision. Cheesy logic? Yes. Little did I know at the time that all of the benefits listed above would conspire to make me a much happier bassist. ;)

OP, if you're looking into 2x10s because of back problems, you might consider a single FEARLESS F210. They're purported to "go as loud as a good 4x10" (so you'd theoretically only need one), can handle a ton of wattage, and are very light.

Absolutely sure an F210 is the equal of good 410s (& superior to run-of-the-mill 410s). Wonderfully small footprint. Only question is do you have the bucks for one, & if you do, are you willing to fork them over?

Actually, what you really want (even if you don't know it quite yet ;) ) is a 15/6. Go used. Check the TB classifieds. They're not available every single day, but neither are they uncommon. Now that's the true ticket :D .
 
Are two, 2x10 cabinets equal to one 4x10 cabinet in all specifications? I have a funky back and want to male loading lighter.
Within the same make and model, the 2x10 often has a slight edge in net cabinet volume compared to half a 4x10.
As a result, the 2x10 might have just a bit more bass extension.
Most commercial boxes are too small for full bass extension, so this might be something to consider.

As noted above, the advantages of a two-piece tall 'n skinny stack outweigh the square 4x10 layout.
A disadvantage is multiple trips to the vehicle, but this is offset by each being a lighter weight.

If you are 2-ohm capable or have two amp channels, you can take advantage of an all-parallel wiring scheme.
A series-parallel wired 4x10 requires 60v input to present 30v to each driver.
With the all-parallel scheme, 30v input is presented to each driver.
This means a more modest power amp, i.e. 225 watts per channel, into 4 ohms.
