Double Bass Ergo 6-String EUB with Problem

Hi folks,

I don't know much about EUB's, but I've been watching this on CL for a couple weeks and just talked to the guy. He'll sell me this unit for $300, but it needs repair. They go for $500-600 used and $900 new. Is this repair worth the trouble?

From the ad:
I noticed the D, G, and C strings exhibit buzz from the first to approximately 6th fret to the point of being unplayable. There is no adjustment, the bass needs repair.

Is this worth fixing? What would be involved and how much might it cost?

I think you're on the wrong side of TB. The EUB guys are typically over on the DB side.

I would say DB Setup & Repair is pretty much the same idea for DB.

As a one piece neck/body with a set bridge, any significant movement in the piece as the wood dries and settles over time may impact playability like this. I've never worked on one, but looking at the design and photos, I'm pretty sure any playability problems could be worked out by planing the fingerboard string paths, and adjusting the nut height and bridge height to set it up correctly. Have you played it yet? Might just be the fellow's technique?

At any rate, assuming its not something like major warping of the wood, this should be easily repairable. Could be time consuming though, so easy might not translate into cheap. I'd ballpark it at under 200, but then you have to decide if its worth it. Have you tried contacting the builder to see what he says? I think he's a TBer, or at least rolls with TBers...

sounds like a good deal. i would just sand it where it buzzes til it dont buzz no more. I would buy that in a second, you can always resell it to me.

maybe higher tensin Piccastio..Pictachio..Picasso... whatever, Pluckin Strangs. would help too, the thin strings look floppy and at 42 scale you can go pretty damn thick.

You could email Jesse at Ergo and ask what he's recommend to fix it.

If buy it for $300.

Don't just sand the area where it buzzes. Treat it like a fret leveling and take your time, don't be a hack.
