I would also like to add that if I tune the whole instrument down to B-E-A-D-G the problem goes away. Jesse said that pressure is a issue. He said he could send me a new pickup if I like.

Double Bass Ergo Megathread part I

Well the intrument is tuned E-A-D-G-C, but lowering the tuned down a 4th takes care of the issue. Jesse said he woudl send me a new pickup. No problem for me, I solder stuff all the time. It just sounds like the e-string is not getting picked up by the pickup. I am not sure what it is. On my othe rupright I have a Daiv Gage realist and even thought its under the foot of the bridge with the e over it I get a balance clean sound from all 4 strings. Not sure what to do.
You really have to fool with the bridge position. It makes a big difference. If mine is not just so my a and d will be dead.
I have a 6 string. I played it at Tonic in NYC on Monday with my teacher Lisle Ellis on his Eminence, two LOUD drummers and two screamming saxophonists and the Ergo just kicked ass. You cannot beat it for the price.
I did a recording as soon as I got into to NYC and used Reuben Radding's Czechease. I don't know what they did to the innards of that thing but it was a blast to play. Still, 5 grand is a lot, to quote the dude "I'm just gonna go find a cash machine.."

Ok I think I fixed it. I took off the bridge, took out my trusty swiss army knife. Chipped off the blue and pooped the bridge back on. The e sounded nice and full, but untill I get my amp I wont know for sure, but it sound a hell of a lot better!
Well after many, many years away from the bass I am finally coming back to it. For the most part I play Irish traditional and Old Time music with a little Blue Grass tossed in here and there.
So with that in mind when I decided I wanted to play Bass again I wanted a sound closer to a UB rather then a BG. After a week of reading info here on Talkbass and looking at the different EUB offerings I contacted Jesse and found that he had a 4 string Ergo that had not been spoken for......well it's spoken for now

Now I need some direction for a practice amp (direction...hmmm make that
). I am trying to keep the cost down and am looking for something for both practice and playing with a few friends in an acoustic setting (so it does not have to shake the walls down 
)
I have looked at a few offerings from Peavey and I have read with interest about the Ashdown Five Fifteen if that helps to show in what direction I want to go. I am trying not to end up with an amp that is ment for a BG and does not sound good at all for a EUB, but I want to try and cut cost if at all possible (one of the reasons I went with the Ergo to begin with....that and the wonderful stuff I read in this thread

I still have my Ergo 4 and haven't changed out the stock strings yet. 
The E string is dead- it is way lower in volume than ADG are.
I've got to get some good strings happening!
Could I ask the Ergo owners here to speak up yet again on any strings you've tried that you REALLY like?
I don't want to go through $200-300 of strings to find some that will really sound great.

Just read the entire megathread and would like to know if there are any Ergo owners in the Chicago area (especially northside) that would be gracious enough to let me try one out before I take the plunge. If I do get one, its going to be a 4 string. thanks!!
I should be in Chicago this summer, hopefully with my new 7 string Jesse is about to start working on...
Well if I go for an Ergo, I hope to place an order within the next month or two. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that this would be a good investment, just waiting to hear back about more info from Jesse.
As to the question about practice amps, I recommend that you check out Fender's Rumble series of small combos. I have the 25 watt version of the previous model, the Frontline series. They sound really good and are pretty cheap at about 2 bills new.
I'd go for it. There is just no competion in this price range. I still love mine after really gigging and touring with it over the past year.
I'm still waiting on Jesse to get back to me. I emailed him on Tuesday (both email addresses) and I still haven't heard back from him. I've read about others who have had trouble getting in contact with him. how quick does he usually reply to your emails?
I happen to know he is on vaction now from coresponding about the 7 string recently.

yea.......i've had my ergo6 for about 10 days and haven't been able to get a response from Jesse yet regarding a couple issues. He probably deserves a vacation, but does anyone know how to adjust the bridge and / or pickup to reduce the big attack thump on the E string ( the A does it a bit too). Also, if I play on the 5th fret and slide up to the 7th, I get a nice bloom on all strings except the B and the E , which don't sustain or resonate as much. So the E is basically all thud and no sustain. Is changing the action the key? Up or down?
It could also be the strings. Are you using the ones that came on it? Jesse puts cheap chinese strings on them for shipping that really sound bad. Get some good strings and you may see the problem go away. Jesse recommended to me a couple of years ago to use D'Addario Helicore Orchestral strings, and they do sound great on his basses.
