I'm still using the stock strings. Only cause I haven't played the ERGO enough to warrant $150-$200 for a new set of strings I'm not even sure I'll like.

Double Bass Ergo Megathread part I

That is the problem with upright strings, the cost. Do a lot of research on the Double Bass Strings forum and then try some. I know that any decent string will sound better than the ones you have on there now.
The reason Jesse recommended the Helicore Orchestral (arco strings) for pizz, according to what he told me, is that the piezos are inherently bright and the darker arco strings take some of that away. It worked for me, I like them a lot.
On my URB I use Eurosonic Ultra-light, and I would like to try them on the Ergo, but I think they are too big in guage to fit without mods to the bass.
D'Addario Helicore Orchestral 97 bucks on Musicians Friend. While not cheap not too painful either.

You can't go wrong with Helicores - pizz or hybrid. Cost is right around $100 and they'll last for quite a while.
I have recently put Corellis on one of my acoustic basses (at Bob Gulihur's recommendation) and like them even more. Next change they go on my Ergo.
Jesse is the best BTW. I have been to his place a few times. Always hospitable and funny.

I think I'll try the D'Addario Helicore Orchestral strings but I have a six-string Ergo. Any suggestions on what to put on for the B and C strings?

I have a Heliocore Low B on my Ergo and I really hate it. It has always been a dead, dull string. I would really go for Spirocores, I put those on my top 5 strings and they sound great.
If you don't want Spiros try Corelli's. Helicores just sound like old, dead Spiros - don't bother. they make all 6 spiros, you just have to glue the low B with Super glue before you cut it.

Glue the winding before you cut it or it will just unravel. That is why I am still suffering with this terrible Heliocore - I bought a Spiro Low B, had no
idea what I was doing and cut it. $50 of string unraveled before my Eyes. My dad calls such things Duma$$ tax.
Anyway, I am waiting for th e7 string to decide what to do next with the low B.
Help me out here guys. On a 4 string, how does the neck size compare to an actual 3/4 double bass?
I assume you mean the "depth" or the "circumference" of the neck? Which 3/4 double bass? Some "actual" basses have thin necks, others have thick ones. It's definitely comparable, as in it fits within the feel and range of "actual" basses.

It was Mozart's father who stipulated that upright bass was 'labor fit for a horse', and given the tree trunks they were offered to play, it's understandable.. I've looked at pictures of Dragonetti's Gaspro DeSalo bass, and the neck was MUCH smaller than the one's I'm referring to), but it's not tiny like a bass guitar, or some student high school string band's instrument.. It's pretty thick, with almost a soft 'V' pattern similar to '50s era Strats, and of course, the Kay upright I used to have, and that everybody wants now."

My 6 string feels like a bass to me, it does not feel like less than my double bass. I just paid for the 7 string so we'll see in a week or so how that feels...
hello, ergo people....i am still struggling with my ergo 6 due mostly to the thud which accompanies the attack on my E string.........i tried moving the bridge around, that didn't work, so next, perhaps I'll try re-soldering the lower pickup (as it seems to be lumpy and soldered at a different point than the upper pickup which sounds great). Jesse said to try lowering the action, but I'll permanently reduce the bridge as a last resort, I think. Does low action enhance or stifle the bloom and sustain? My 3 bottom strings don't have proper bloom and sustain.
Also, the C is high and tight, so I need to perhaps get a lighter gauge and maybe file the top of the bridge lower at the C slot. Is there an expert in the house? I play 99% pizz ( latin jazz, funk etc)
Also.........I wanted to ask where you can get strings on the internet at decent pricing. I still got the cheap factory strings on it. I was thinking Spirocores, but other suggestions are welcome. Musician's Friend.com seems to handle only the 4 string sets. Where can I get 6 string sets, or single B's and C's? Toronto's stores don't have C's at all.
I know this bass is gonna kick ass, but I need to do some tweaking.

I lowered the c and b to expose the basic four string. I also got a cheap compresor pedal that works better than the preamps I tried.
Hey Damon, have you tried the Corellis on your Ergo? if so, how are they? You said you like the Spirocores better than the Helicores? how do they sound/feel compared to the helicores?
Out of curiosity, what amps are you guys using with your Ergo? Anyone use a Fishman Pro-EQ Platinum Bass preamp?
