Double Bass Ergonomics issues with Shen necks?

I've been noticing that I have some thumb discomfort when I play my Shen SB180. I have small hands and play 5-string electric basses as a result since I can play further up the neck. I'm trying to watch how I place my thumb as my instructor showed me (meat of thumb on center of neck, aligned with middle finger).

By comparison, the Juzek that I've inquired about in another thread is far more comfortable to play. It seems like I've gotten along with some other German basses fairly well. Do certain styles/manufacturers of basses have thinner necks?

Although I don't like "skinny" necks, I've never really liked the neck profile on the Shens. It's more than just thickness. Other basses, with necks generally as thick as the Shens but with differing profiles, are more comfortable for me to play. Judging from the many who are happy with their Shens, this doesn't seem to be a common issue, at least once the player adapts.
